Hey people:

I'm really happy that the people from the late 60s and early 70s can use this as an occasion to get together, but I'm really wondering what happened to those of us from the earliest pledge classes of the newly reconstituted Beta Chi in the mid 60s. I'm totally bummed that so few of us are represented, and I wonder what can happen to get more of us at the reunion. As a current Stanford faculty member, I am really somewhat interested in the history of the whole thing, and I don't think it is adequately represented by what happened in the late 60s and early 70s.

All the best –

Rob,
There is a yahoo group called new oasis. It is centered around the classes of 63, 64, and 65.
Remember that most of our class moved off campus after one year. Not much fraternal feeling.

Rob,

The plan is recidivist from the two groups will meet at the Faculty club on Oct 21 and share documents and stories.

I've attached the narrative of the history of the house by Peter Steinhart ('65).  I expect others might also find it of interest.

This is fascinating stuff, the history of the departure from Sigma Nu. I'd vaguely known some of it but the detail (and the presumed role of Trent Lott!) was news to me.

I must say I do remember more than one party from the 1969-71 years, so my experience doesn't match Mark Michaels (but I'd dropped out of Stanford and moved to New York by 1972) and the accommodations were certainly co-ed. Definitely.

OWR- I have only this to say (as a bona fide member of the unregenerate BX class of '69-'70), you are most welcome to attend the reunion and transmute, that is to say, rectify, our misbegotten visions of self-significance.

I haven't made an announcement yet because we are still working on the details but we are planning on having several 5 minute speeches about the history of what happened at BX from 62 through 72.
John Luce will give a 3 to 5 minute speech about the separation from Sigma Nu. He's distributed several write ups about the sigma nu split on this Beta Chi reunion google group site. We will probably post it on the BX web site.
Craig Wood will give a short 5 minute speech about what BX was like when he lived there.
I am searching for a woman to give a short 5 minute talk about the female experience at Beta Chi. Several women have been asked but feel free to contact me at jamescraw...@gmail.com if you are interested in speaking.
We want to limit the speeches to these constraints because we want to leave as much time as possible for attendees to talk to each other.

There is a section of the web site (focalpnt.com/bx/) that has photos of BX membership in the 62 -64 years as well as a few pictures of individuals. These photos were obtained from the New Oasis yahoo group. Terry Foreman generously gave permission to post all the photos on the New Oasis yahoo group site on the Beta Chi reunion web site. This allows everyone to view the photos without having to join New Oasis or yahoo groups.

Thank you Terry,
this historical perspective fleshes out the vague impression I had of the reasons and motivations behind the Beta Chi succession from the National, a story which has always made me proud to be associated with the people who brought the house to a place where I might enter that good company.

Peter

Speaking of which, has anybody reached out to John Haygood or Phil Riles of the class of '69? I think Phil took over his dad's education lobby business in Sacramento.

I will go ahead and post it on the reunion website, if that's OK.

It's OK with Peter Steinhart and with me.
