I have attached a list of BX alumni that I have no email addresses for. If you are in contact with any of them and they are interested in being informed about what is happening regarding the reunion in Oct 2013 have them email me jamescraw...@gmail.com and I'll send them an invitation.
FYI I have list of former residents of Beta Chi. There are 147 individuals from class of 1968 thru 1974. Of those I had email addresses of 102 and I sent them all invites. Of the 102 individuals 53 of them joined the group. I expect that number to increase in the next couple of days as there are still open invitations.
Now I'm trying to track down the remaining lost souls. I appreciate any help you can provide.
Also I have discovered that the list is incomplete. Several people have contacted me who were residents but weren't included on the list provided by the Alumni  Association. Also there are those who didn't live at Beta Chi who would like to attend. If you know anyone have them contact me and I'll include them on the list and send them an invite.
We are also considering including all BX alumni from 1963 thru 67 (which would be those who lived at BX after the split from Sigma NU in 1963-64). 2013 will be the 50th anniversary from the date of the split. More on that later once we've had more discussions with the interested parties.
Take care.
Merry XMas and Happy New Year

Hi Jim,

Good work!

I don't know the whereabouts or e-mails for anyone on the list although Graham Baker died in the 70's,
a victim of AIDS.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Jim,

This is the best (and for me, only) reason to return to Palo Alto!

Would you share the list of those who do have email addresses for (not necessarily with those addresses attached) just so we can make sure no-one's left out? To the degree that we can remember anything specific from those lovely, often quite deranged days and nights, of course.

Cheers,

James--

Thanks for doing this.  I may have a bit of a conflict.   I plan to attend the Jordan House 2013 reunion, as I had lots of Jordan friends.  One question...Have you sent us out a list of the former Beta Chi residents and also those who have responded?  That might inspire some, seeing names of friends and former friends.  Beta Chi brings back many fond memories but one sad one.  My 71-72 roommate Jason Paras drowned while swimming in a river (in Switzerland, I believe) some years ago.. Jason was an accomplished viola di gamba player and a wonderful person.  Best wishes in pulling this party together.  Talk about herding cats!.....

There's a Sam Blackwell in IMDB as a writer/producer active in the 90s (last produced credit 2001) and I think that was our Sam, but there's no contact information. Colin Bruce might have stayed in touch with him. The WGA might also have contact information. I can check on that next year if no other info turns up.

Sam directed and played Lear with Sigourney as one of the cruel sisters.

Jimmy,
Do you have these people on the "found" list?

Joel Mandelkorn. Joel lived in a parachute tent out in the yard at
Beta Chi. I think he is teaching yoga at Princeton now.

Dave Hanson. Dave and his girlfriend lived under the eaves in Lisa's
and my room. (They had to crawl through a hole in the cupboard to get
to their cave.) Dave taught for many years at RISD and now lives in
Iowa

John Oliver and Roger Warnecke. They lived across the hall from me.

And Kid Africa. Our resident band who lived in the alcove off the foyer...

Also, Marly just reminded me that Cotty Chubb's fiat is on the
deceased list. "Chubby", as the fiat was called, met a sad end
running amok down a hill in LA and crashing into a toilet.

cooler and probably impossible is to include Buddy Guy. Also, I don't

A friend of mine saw Buddy play at LSJU about ten years. Buddy told the
story about BX and gave one of the greatest shows this guy -- a big fan--
had ever seen.

Frank Massey told me his brother was an artist in Ventura. Frank died about
five years ago.

I checked about Bill Graham with a mutual friend and he said Bill had just
dropped from sight.

Apparently Buddy Guy played at Beta Chi and
1. we were too stoned out of our minds to notice it was Buddy Guy

2. we were off tripping in the Redwoods or at the Russian River

I just got off the phone with Charlie Field, who does not have an
email address. He says he is very interested and wondered whether Greg
Martinelli or Craig Wood have been contacted. Anyhow, Charlie will
communicate through me and wants to be kept informed. He says he is
going to wrack his brain to try to remember people, which means that
we ought to have a list of those contacted, so we can add to it. There
were so many hangers-on who were part of our community even though
there were never Stanford students, like Tim English.

Also, for those who are ex-students, has anyone tried to get their
contact information from stanford Alumni Association?

Buddy Guy used to come to Beta Chi in the late 60's and members (like
Greg Martinelli and others) would vacate their rooms so that Buddy and
his band could stay there when they had gigs in SF. They would
rehearse in the living room/dining room area and Beta Chi would charge
admission so that non-members could come, so it was just as if they
were performing for us. I don't remember who got the money. This
happened several times. They would be there for a few days each time
and, of course, there was a lot of partying, which was part of Beta
Chi's attraction for Buddy Guy. Of course, Buddy Guy today is huge.
Back then he was well known but not nearly the icon he is today.

Smitty

PS When we have the reunion, people should bring souvenirs they have
of that era. For example, I own two paintings of Beta Chi by Jerry
Massey. One shows the dining room when Ned was our cook and also
features a portrait of E Graham Baker among others, many of who I can
no longer identify. The other shows the house from the back yard with
a lot of Beta Chi's ghosts floating in the air. Both are pretty
surrealistic.

Thanks for all those great memories. Any idea where Roger Warneke is
now? He was from the Bay Area, I remember, so maybe he is still

I have many fond memories of trips in Cotty Chubb's Fiat, including,

hear that it met its demise crashing into a toilet...

That is indeed sad. And strange. And if true, not the first time that particular car willfully ran amok down a hill. It did so once way up and deep in the hills above Woodside when it rolled unattended nose first off NSGW Road (Native Sons of the Golden West) into a stand of redwoods. No toilet was involved in that incident however. Thankfully.

What fun to eavesdrop on this desultory remembrance.  Sorry to say, John Oliver is also dead, some time now, of AIDS.  I have emails for many of the "Community" subset (fall, winter, spring, 1969): Colin Bruce, Hugh McCarten, Jocelyn Gunnar, Lloyd Fonvielle, J.B. White, etc. Greg Martinelli was living in NYC 10 years ago. I wonder myself about Rochelle Slenz and Barbara Epmier.  Also, the great Shakespearean actor Sam Blackwell, who played Lear on-campus in the fall of '69.  And so many other faces now, unfortunately, with no names.  Will try to attend any gathering.  Living in central Texas (boy out of the country, country out of the boy, etc.).

I am sorry to hear about John Oliver...
This is my remembrance of him, one among others....

John Oliver led me and a couple of others on a journey through the
Bardos of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. This involved ingesting magic
mushrooms, putting on blindfolds and lying down together on a soft bed
in a candle-lit room for HOURS, while John read to us from the Tibetan
book of the Dead and chanted. It was all about the moment of death
and what awaits us as we pass through into the next life. There were
visions of Buddha and angels and demons and the Lord of Death. We
must have been hoping for enlightenment to descend upon us! What
strikes me now though, is how curious and willing we were to jump
willy nilly into the unknown like that....

All,
This has been great, getting me off my butt to reconnect - I have just traded voice messages with Sam (Blackwell) and talked with Lois (Greg Martinelli's wife) at their home in NY - Greg is in CA for the holidays. Hopefully they will both be part of this.

Barbara George (Epmeier) is in CA and established womensenergymatters.org and Jim has all her contact information.

For many years I lived on 21st Street in NY in the loft beneath Lloyd's sister Lee's place, but have lost touch since I moved out to NJ 20 plus years back.

I'll work on Hugh, who's not yet responded to Mr Holmes. You too, Johnnie. I recall well listening to The Band's second album in your and Hugh's second floor room at the top of the stairs just to the left, among several other adventures. Yodel-odel-oh-eh-he-hoo.

Never a Beta Chi resident - but often a visitor to the many friends who lived there, my life was forever changed by one line of graffiti scrawled on the wall in an upper floor bathroom:

"Darkness conceals the hippopotamus"

Will Rogers

- and slept on the roof many nights

Will, you forgot the rejoinder, added somewhat later:  "But daylight conceals the stars."  Thanks.  I had completely forgotten.

Hi all,

Yes there was a magazine article with John Oliver and me in it.  I remember my mother wasn't too thrilled about it.  I don't know if it was in People.  I used to have a copy.  I will see if I can find it and bring it to the reunion.

Take care all,
Lisa

I found Dave Hanson! He's alive and well. His wonderful photographic
work/career is on his website...

Lost indeed, I recall Don Sullivan shot himself on Pomponio Beach way back when.
