Greetings,

As you may know, Beta Chi was spun off from Signa Nu 50 years ago.  To mark this monumental event, we are having the first and last all Beta Chi Reunion on Stanford Campus Reunion Weekend October 19, 2013.  Many of you have received notice of this but for some of you this will be your first notice of this once in a lifetime event.

Tom Grey and John M. Luce, representing the host committee of the Sigma Nu Class of 1963, met with Jim Holmes, Tom Knapp,  of the Beta Chi Class of 1971, and Allen Edwards Beta Chi Class of 1970 this week at the Stanford Faculty Club to almost-finalize plans for our combined Reunion Reception and Dinner there on October 19, 2013, during Reunion Weekend. Tom Amis, class of 1969 and Craig Wood, class of 1970, are also members of the organizing committee. Invited to the event are Sigma Nus/Beta Chis from 1962-1966  and Beta Chis from 1967 through the time of Synergy House. We have reserved the main dining room at the Faculty Club, which seats 150 comfortably, and the nearby terrace and grounds. Our event on October 19 will celebrate with words, pictures, and our presence years of friendship in a unique fraternity, which eventually became co-ed and was recently reconstituted as Sigma Nu on campus in what was once the Beta House. We will be inviting present-day Sigma Nus to join us that evening. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, they know about us.

This email  will bring you up to date on our plans, to prompt those of you who did not respond affirmatively to previous invitation to do so now, and to ask those of you planning to attend to send a check for $50/person towards our deposit at the Faculty Club. This charge represents approximately half or what our final per-person dinner bill will be (estimated to be between $100 and $120 depending on how many attend); Once we know the exact total,  you will get a request for the remainder some time before the dinner. Our dinner will include hors díoeuvres; salad; a fish, meat, or vegetarian main course; desert; and two glasses of wine. Not included are pre- and post-dinner drinks from a cash bar we will maintain, and any extra wine you might want to buy (good selections at reasonable prices) from the same source. John Gantner of the Class of 1962 has generously donated wine from his and Nancy Walkerís SchoolHouse Vineyard above St. Helena, and we hope others will donate wine as well to help minimize our bar charges. The corkage fee is $15/bottle; we have to give the wine to the Faculty Club in advance of the evening, so please donít bring bottles with you but let me get them from you before October 19. We also have to tell the Club our dinner choices in advance, which means both that I will contact those of you who are coming about your dinner choices as the Reunion approaches and that we cannot accommodate walk-ins. So RSVP with your check to this e-mail as soon as you can.

Most of you know that the Pac 12 dictates where and when Stanford and other conference teams play football. As a result, the Alumni Association doesnít know at what time the game will be played on October 19 and may not for some time. If it begins in the early afternoon, we will plan our Reception for 6 PM with Dinner at 7 PM. If the game begins in the mid-afternoon, we will start our Reception at 7 PM. If the game is at night, we will hold to our 6 PM start time and miss the game (which some will do regardless of when it begins). Marshall Turner of the host committee reminds us that whenever the game starts, members of the Class of 1963 are invited to walk across the field before kick-off.

With this e-mail I am sending the master list of those of you who have indicated earlier that you were likely to attend the Reunion Reception and Dinner, those we have not heard from or don't have email addresses for, and  those Beta Chis who  have died since we first lived in the house. Please let me know of any others who should be on the deceased list so we can honor them on October 19. Cliff Probst sent a wonderful catalogues of Bob Knottís sculptures, drawings, and photographs shown in the Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery at Wake Forest University after his recent death ñ they will be displayed on October 19. Anything you might bring that evening or send before it in remembrance of old friends will be displayed as well.

Have a good summer. On behalf of the entire reunion committee, we hope to see you in the fall.

The Beta Chi 2013 Reunion committee.

Please make check for $50 payable to James Holmes

Hi James,

I am sending my check in tomorrow's mail. Also, spoke with both Charlie Field and Eric Briedenbach, both of whom have indicated that they are going to attend. They have info regarding where to send the check. I did not get an updated master list with your email.

Hi, All:

I see many names with faces I remember clearly from an era long ago and very far, far away.  Myself, I have not changed a bit, except in a few minor areas not worth mentioning.

I don't know what the Fall holds schedule-wise for me, but I am willing to make a bet of $50 in any event.

All my best,

Friends:

I buy in to Greg's plan and I will send my $50 in hopes that I can make it.  Not sure.  I am active writing and doing around immigration issues and Fall may be a busy time.

Meanwhile, I have a Greg Martinelli story:

I was in Fairway, an NYC middleclass alternative to Whole Foods.  I see Greg and said hello and I mentioned Beta Chi.  This was many years ago, so I don't recall whether he remembered me, but in any event he was busy loading his stuff on the register belt and I moved on.  Then, a woman approached me and asked whether "that was Greg Martinelli."  I said yes, so I asked whether he was famous.  That part of the event, I do remember.  She said "sort of."  From where I stand, "sort of" famous is pretty good.

Peace,

My first thought was wtf does a kid from castroville know about chinese food but he was right.

Okay, my only Greg story is looking down the stairway to see a wide wicked mouth hollering "HOUSE DROP!!"  minutes before piling into cars, heading for another great show at the Fillmore or Winterland.

Speaking of drugs, has anyone else been doing community theatre?  I know many of you are involved in the arts, and I bet more than a few have found joy and fulfillment telling good stories well on stage.  I'm a midlife converted and enthusiastic participant in this intoxicating form of play, happily leaving a full house of visiting family in a couple hours to be a very sick puppy in Cuckoo's Nest at the Ukiah Playhouse.  I know you are out there...  Maybe we can pool our talents to come up with a 10 minute script, learn it, rehearse it once, or not, and just do it at the faculty club.

JB,  Looks like it.  Maybe Lloyd and/or you could work the whole thing up into a screenplay or even a cable series (which would, of necessity, conclude with the shattering, alien-informed exegesis of "Darkness conceals the hippopotamus."

Yes. Good idea.

Notice that most of the traffic here comes from the 69-71 era?
Probably most still having flashbacks ("house drop" indeed.).
Or did we just have the most fun?

"House drop" is not a phrase i recall hearing.  I nevertheless get it.

Me neither, Allen, truth be told, but it was quoted earlier in the thread.

Anyone else recall trying to hit a volleyball with trails at 3 in the morning and a full team on both sides of the net?  That seemed really odd on so many levels.

Close. Volleyball in the afternoon (post rounds of tequila shots, at least), without a ball, and a full team on both sides of the net.

A new Olympic sport: volleyball 5 seconds after reality, . . . naturally, with a drug-infused sentient volleyball.

Hello Beta Chi-ans!

My name is Justine Massey and I'll be standing in for my late dad W. Frank Massey from the class of '66.  I graduated class of 2010 and lived in Synergy, where the legacy of Beta Chi's "alternative lifestyles" is still going strong.  I actually didn't discover the connection between the houses until after I moved in, but it made total sense :)

I'm looking forward to meeting you and hearing stories from the different generations!

Hey Justine,

I didn't know your dad - I'm a few years younger, but I like the idea of you joining us.  See you there!

Yes, there was, in fact, a house drop, possibly Owsley "Window Pane", the gold standard at the time, and the entire house played volleyball.  As I recall, the game was not to be confused with an actual athletic event, but more like an Antonioni movie, except for the part where a lot of people were looking at their hands.  Then some fool drove through the playing area on a motorcycle (possibly me, possibly me in a hallucination, possibly someone else who I thought was me -- well, that's LSD).

The check is in the mail.

I am watching my hand put it in the envelope.

I also seem to recall a house drop that involved playing sardines....where one person would hide themselves away and everyone else had to look for them...and when you found them, you hid out too...I vaguely remember all the lights being out, and when you finally stumbled on the room where everyone was hidden away it was bursting with giggles in the dark.  Now who made up the rules for that game??!!

Peace,

Just now listened to a rendition of Old Friends by the New York Voices from a Montreal Jazz Festival recording made 15 years back.

Have written a check, and posting it tomorrow.

So sorry I'm going to be missing this reunion; it sounds like lots of fun. I've already connected with a few of you on Facebook. For those others who might actually remember me [theatre major, lived on the sleeping porch, performed in Beclch in the big tent on the back lawn], I will definitely ,accept Facebook friends requests so I can stay caught up on the most recent hijinks of the Beta Chi crowd.

Cheers,
