Hi Wendy and team.

I found this grant (see hyperlink and description below) that is
aligned with our goals for the school and the district. The deadline
to apply for the next academic year is March 17 - coming up quick!!
One advantage is that we can apply at the school level, making it
feasible to move on this quickly. I saw that Santa Monica USD in its
entirety is a grantee, so we could also move on this as a group of
schools or at the district level.

Wendy, can you please take a look and share with Principal LaBreque?
Please let me know your thoughts and next steps.

Thanks!

Michelle

Program Description: The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)
provides children in participating elementary schools with a variety
of free fresh fruits and vegetables. This is a competitive grant that
must be applied for annually. The level of funds provided to any one
school depends on the school's enrollment and the available funding
provided by the USDA.

Purpose: The purpose of the program is to expand and increase the
variety and amount of fruits and vegetables children experience and
consume. Combined with nutrition education and a reinforcement of
healthful eating habits, the program emphasizes the long-term goals of
positively influencing children's life-long eating habits and
combating childhood obesity.

Who is Eligible to Apply: Public and non-profit private elementary
schools that have 50% or greater of their students receiving free and/
or reduced price meals. Schools with the highest percentage of
students certified for free and reduced price meals will be selected
over schools with lower percentages of free and/or reduced price meals.

Dear folks,

Check out this link regarding what Berkeley, CA has done with the food
program at their schools:

Thanks,

In following the link, I got to Wisconsin Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant program. That program is not funded for California. When I called WI, they said that federal funding is distributed to each state for administration, so it would seem our state has it's own Grant funds for the same thing.

I couldn't find more info from the Dept. of Ed site on this.

Michelle: What did you find that listed Santa Monica?

I will do some leg work to help Edison apply if we can.

Nicole

This is well worth the time to read/see. The arcticle is short with a few 5-6 minutes webisodes about how the Berkely program came to be, some of the challenges and how it can be duplicated in other schools/districts.

Their revamp was propelled by parents who unified and were working with a district that got on board and pushed it.

Anyone have the latest on the New Hire timing/process for Agnes' replacement?
What do we want the District to consider before making the selection? Who at the District makes the decision? ...some question I don't have answers to yet. Maybe you know.

I am in touch with Franklin's committee on this and will invite them to our Google Group.

I visited the Santa Monica USD food website, where they mentioned this year they were awarded this grant. I copied/pasted the name of the grant on Google, and followed the trail from there. I didn't see anything in the application that specified particular states.

I am confident that if Santa Monica can benefit from it, so can we. Anybody up for a call to Santa Monica USD?

Michelle
