I got a set of these in November 2013. Well after the season, long after college dorm shopping and before "Radiant Orchid" was crowned color of the year. And I got a really good deal on them through Lamps Plus (but still through the Amazon website.) There was a problem with the order and it took a few weeks for them all to be shipped, but problems were sorted out satisfactorily, and I was buying for use in 2014 anyway. The chairs are the same lovely shade of bright purple you see in the ad, (and ya, it sure looks like radiant orchid to me.) The legs and frames of the chairs are metal, steel I think. Too heavy for aluminum, too light for wrought iron. The metal finish on the legs and under the seat is a smooth but not shiny purple epoxy. The webbing you see on the seat and back is purple plastic, (maybe fair to call it resin.) There are rounded purple plastic (or resin) caps on the bottoms of the legs. The metal parts underneath the webbing, (the seat and back frame) have a dark brown powder coated finish. The brown is not obvious, but visible. You can also see staples along the edges of the frame and they look to be either powder coated or galvanized, but the finish on some of these are scraped. You can see silver spots on some of the staples. Again, not horribly obvious, but visible. One of the chairs I received had scuff marks on the legs so I put that one outside to sit all winter long in the snow to see if it would rust. Outdoor chairs will get scuffed and banged around, especially stacking chairs, so I thought this would be a good test. The scuffed chair was also placed on the sunny side of the house to see if it would fade. The rest of the chairs hung out in the deep dark basement over the winter. The good news is that so far the chair has not faded. Big caveat, the sun is pretty far away during the winter and I don't know how the plastic mesh will hold up to high summer temperatures. But over the winter the plastic survived, didn't crack or fall apart. The bad news is, yes, the metal did rust. It rusted where the epoxy was scuffed and where the plastic caps on the bottoms of the legs meet the metal. Surprisingly, it did not rust at the scuffed staples. There is not a ton of rust. The chair is not oozing rusty water. My game plan is to clean up the guinea pig chair and car wax all of them for the outdoors. I'll also have to find something to seal the bottoms of the legs where they meet the plastic caps. The other thing I had to do was add a washer to one area where you screw the legs onto the bottom of the seat. The chair would not set level without it, and I had to mess around with it to figure out where to put the extra washer. So, why the 4 stars? I got them for a very reasonable price and I like the fun color. They match my silly flamingo pillows. If I can't fix the rust problem well enough to put on the patio, I can still use as garden chairs or in the lawn. They are very easy to put together, (but keep extra washers on hand.) One other thing in case you haven't guessed already, box says Made in China.
