Take Action: Protect Our Roadless Areas
This year marks the ten-year anniversary of the Roadless Rule, which remains among the most popular environmental initiatives in American history. Four million public comments were filed in strong support of the measure, which safeguards fifty-five million acres of America's most scenic and remote public lands against road construction and extractive industries. Yet despite its popularity, the Roadless Rule has not been codified as law, and currently faces the threat of reversal in the United States House of Representatives.
Tell your representative to protect America's roadless areas by co-sponsoring Representative Jay Inslee's bill to make the Roadless Rule permanent.

Go Outside: Great Outdoors America Week
This week is Great Outdoors America Week, and not only will there be hundreds of events where people can enjoy the outdoors around the U.S., but there also will be close to 200 activists from across the country in Washington, DC, urging Congress to protect our nation's natural legacy. These activists include a large delegation from the Sierra Club's Resilient Habitats campaign and Mission Outdoors.

Grassroots Activism: Rallying for Clean Air and Good Jobs
Last week the Sierra Club joined the Teamsters, SEIU, Puget Sound Sage, Change to Win, and the Church Council of Greater Seattle to rally outside the American Port Authority Conference in Seattle in support of clean air and good jobs.
Neighborhoods surrounding the Seattle Port have some of the highest asthma rates in the region, and the Puget Sound region ranks in the top 5 percent for air toxics. This is a key environmental justice issue in Seattle, and the Washington State Chapter of the Sierra Club has been working with allies in the labor and the environmental justice community on port reform for the past couple of years.
"Sustainable communities need clean air and good jobs -- instead we're stuck with dirty air and dead-end jobs"," said Benjamin Courteau of the Washington State Chapter.

Victory: Phasing Out Coal in Kentucky
The Sierra Club is celebrating the announcement that Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas & Electric will retire three coal plants in Kentucky. Sierra Club members have long fought these dirty coal plants in the Bluegrass State -- and we've been sharing their stories about the health and environmental problems for years.
