I had a Bosch Aquastar 125B tankless water heater circa 2004. The heat exchanger froze and a replacement heat exchanger would have been $300. And it would have likely froze up again because the design is inherently flawed for climates subject to freezing temperatures. Heaters of this had natural draft vertical venting. With negative air pressure inside the building, such as caused by another natural draft vented space heater, cold air gets sucked into the water heater venting resulting in a freeze. There is no way to fix this problem, except perhaps by putting a 60W light bulb inside it. If you have one of these, consider yourself lucky if it hasn't frozen yet.

The only two options available to those in freezing climates are (1) direct vent + freeze protection and (2) power vent with a backdraft damper. I am going with the Rheem because it meets the criteria of design #1. Time will tell whether this was a wise decision.

I chose the Rheem 84 rather than the 64 because it has an option to supply 180 degree water. This unit is in a small metal building with a requirement for unlimited hot water. I can think of several applications where 180 degree water could be useful. If you do not need unlimited hot water, I would just get a tanked hot water heater.

I bought the Rheem RTG20210 3/5-Inch Horizontal Termination Kit for RTG-95DV and a Rheem RTG20151W 6" Vent Length. I installed the unit myself, and install was painless. The old tankless water heater had 1/2" fittings and the Rheem has 3/4" male fittings for cold and hot water, and a 3/4" male NPT fitting for gas, and an included 3/4" valve, making the gas connection female pipe. Fortunately, my natural gas supply was 1", and the hot and cold supplies were 3/4", so all I need to do is adapt. Home depot was the only place in town that had the proper sized gas connector, one with 3/4" fittings and 7/8" OD line, for appliances up to 290,900 BTU (Brasscraft cssb21-24P). All in all, I spent a little over $900 for the heater, venting, fittings and shipping.

As others have stated, if you are replacing a tanked hot water heater, which probably is not against an outside wall, it will probably be cheaper and easier to put the tankless water heater against an outside wall and reroute natural gas and water lines. Also, if you are investing in one of these tankless water heaters and you also have space heating requirements, look into hydronics.
