I am what you call a "power user" of 5" sanders. I have an old milk crate of burned up Dewalt(4), PC(3), Makita (2) and Ryobi (1) sanders that I have accumulated over the last 10 or so years to testify that well over 25 linear MILES of 1x6 and 1x8 panelings, approximately 500 exposed stair treads with handrails, hundreds of beams, 1,000s of feet of trim and mouldings and even several sets of cabinetry have fallen victim to the extreme test of endurance that I have asked of them. (I don't know why I keep the dead, maybe it's sentimental or something). I have logged NO LESS than 2500 hours with a 5" sander in my hand and at least another 1000 shared between my 6" Bosch RO and 4x24 PC VS belt sander (these will be reviewed seperately) When I heard about the new 390 coming out last year, I was chomping at the bit to get one and when it became available (finally!) I ordered it. Now, over 200 sheets of paper later, I can finally, with confidence, say that I don't ever want to hold another 5" in my hand besides the PC. I heard all the complaints about the size, but my large hands love the grip, even in awkward positions and the vibration is so minimal I don't have to wear the wrist wraps I used to when sanding for extended periods. I learned years ago that to make ANY sander last longer is to toss the dust bag and go with the vacuum adapter so I highly recommend going that route. I modified the included step reducer/bag adapter to my central shop vac via a swivel ended hose to reduce kinks and I can now use it hours on end without fighting it the way a solid linked hose does. Compared side by side, hand in hand with the previous 340 series PC, this sander is FAR smoother, much more powerful, and vastly less fatiguing. If you need a RO sander for occasional use and price is a factor, then this unit may be more than you need. If you use your sander professionally, like I do, it may be time for you to take a look at the next gen.
