For years now Ultimate Ears has provided my personal benchmark for the best sound in-ear headphones can produce. I listen to music on my own favorite headphones, their TripleFi 10s, every day, and whenever I am testing a new headphone I always compare it against both the TripleFis and a friend's older pair of SuperFi 5 Pros which are still the best-sounding things I've ever put in my ears. So I was excited to test the new top of the Ultimate Ears consumer lineup, the UE 900 -- the first really new high-end earphone UE has produced since the Logitech acquisition, and a make-or-break model for the brand.

I'll go into more detail below, but here's the short version: the UE 900s passed the test with flying colors. These are simply fantastic headphones. They deliver just what they should: truly excellent, best-in-class sound quality (though it's arguably not much of an upgrade over the already fantastic-sounding TripleFi and older SuperFi models), a few key improvements in build and form factor, and a premium feel in keeping with the high price tag.

The unboxing experience is entirely commensurate with the UE 900s' price tag. A store-shelf-friendly advertising wrapper protects the outside of the real box, which is a heavy black cardboard enclosure stuffed with protective closed-cell foam. Inside its lid, a cardboard folder protects the manual and warranty information, along with UE's traditional photo booklet, full of interesting concert images. Below this you find the headphones themselves, easily removed from the foam along with their plastic hard case, an extra cable, a soft pouch, and all the usual accessories (different-sized fam and silicone tips, airline attenuator, 1/4" plug adaptor). The new hinged, shiny plastic hard case has a magnetic closure and neat little built-in storage for extra tips and the 1/4" adaptor, but it's also larger and heavier, less pocketable and more vulnerable to ugly scratching than UE's bulletproof former aluminum clamshell case -- so despite the cosmetic appeal, it's not a perfect upgrade.

The UE 900s are a big improvement over their predecessors in form and fit. I found the shape made it far easier to achieve a good seal with the 900s than with my TripleFis, and the earbuds pivot on their cables, making both untangling and fitting easier (though I fear this may make the connection more vulnerable to damage, as only time will tell, and the cable is not backward-compatible with TripleFis or SuperFis due to the new round connector). The new lightweight braided cable is a huge improvement; it both resists tangling and transmits much less handling noise than more rigid cables. The bendable, semirigid over-the-ear portion of the cable is not as useful in achieving a solid, tug-proof fit because of the pivoting earbud mounts, but overall this cable is a huge upgrade (and it's very nice to have a backup, remote/mic-less cable included in the box in case of damage or wear).

In any case, the sound is what really matters here, not the package. And there, the UE 900s simply deliver; this is the best, clearest sound I've heard in any in-ear headphone I've tried. The clarity and separation of the sound is amazing, even compared to the TripleFis and SuperFis; the individual instruments, even background players, pop out of a jazz ensemble or orchestra -- or even a multi-guitar rock band -- with clarity that I never knew my recordings even allowed. And the human voice seems unbelievably clear -- though many pricey headphones call themselves "IEMs" just as a buzzword, these really do deliver the vocals-to-the-front sound of a studio monitor, almost to a fault (e.g. I found myself cringing at an occasional hissed "s" or popped "p" sound in tracks I never knew had this flaw before!). I ran a series of direct comparisons against my beloved TripleFis and my friend's SuperFi Pros, and found it very hard to pick a winner; the UE 900s are undeniably clearer and crisper, with a broader separation between instruments and stunningly rendered vocals, but the SuperFi Pros win on warmth and have a more rounded and atmospheric (if not as crisp) bass response, and the TripleFis a brighter treble. It's simply a matter of taste whether the UE 900s are worth the significant upcharge over the already excellent-sounding TripleFi 10s, but in any case, their sound quality is excellent enough to justify their fairly exorbitant price tag.

I did notice that the UE 900s initially needed a lot of power -- they had to be driven much louder, at a higher volume setting, than other earphones to achieve a similar loudness. While I'm usually inclined to dismiss the idea of "burning in" headphones as a superstition, it does seem like the power my 900s need has significantly diminished after a few hours of dedicated listening, as has the 900s' initially almost harsh high end. It might be a good idea to give a new pair of 900s a bit of time to settle down before passing final judgment on their sound quality.

When people ask me to recommend the best-sounding in-ear headphones in existence, this is where I'll point them. Ultimate Ears has once again justified the name.
