This is a solid, well-designed, extremely useful hunk of metal. Do a few test runs with it in various conditions before really putting it to use, especially if you are, as I am, a relative newbie to recovery techniques.

I have to laugh at myself here because it's common sense I gleefully ignored on my first 'real' use after testing it - yeah, don't get cocky before you're familiar enough with it to get beyond the first level of 'theory vs. practice.' It worked so smoothly and easily in the test runs that when I really needed it the first time, in slightly more extreme conditions (read: mud from the pits of hell lurking invisibly in the middle of an otherwise stable lakeshore, no branches or similar around to stick under the tires), I got sloppy in my respect for the laws of physics and made my evening far more memorable than it had to be, by not a) taking a sufficiently generous amount of line from the winch to really give myself room for an effective pulling angle, and b) starting with the basics like *thoroughly* digging out my tires. It was touch and go there for a bit. My mistakes might not be yours, and more experienced folks likely wouldn't make them at all regardless of being new to the Pull Pall, but the sentiment stands.

Ah, user error. Such a harsh and valuable learning tool.

Three other notes:

One, if you're in mud, the anchor's a beast to dig out once your vehicle's clear, especially if you can't position yourself to use the winch to do it. Seriously - bring a sturdy shovel and prepare to get a workout, or you're leaving it behind.

Two, it starts rusting extremely quickly after the paint gets scraped away with its first use. No real prob - I picked up a can of outdoor 'pewter' metallic spray paint from the hardware store, cleaned it up a little, and gave it a couple coats; well-protected and good as new until the next trip out.

Three, for those who have a vertical high-lift jack mount on their rear bumpers - the Pull Pal fits, too. I've got an AEV bumper/tire carrier with a dual jack mount, and both fit perfectly there together (with the Pull Pall's detachable shovel-end in a bag in the cargo area). It was a pain coming up with a secure lock for both, but I found a cable that does a pretty good job when threaded through both pieces of equipment and the carrier. Depending on your mount configuration, prepare to get creative.
