Subject: Youth Jam 2014!
Dear Community,
On November 8, 2014, Albuquerque’s young people will be taking the stage to share their strengths and talents to prevent suicide, substance use, and bullying and to promote health and wellness in our community at Youth Jam 2014.
We are grateful to Bernalillo County for recognizing the value of Youth Jam and funding this year’s event. In addition to Bernalillo County, early sponsors include: Wordsong LLC, Youth POWER, Warehouse 508, Waking Up Alive, New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition, Presbyterian, and New Day Youth and Family Services.
For those of you who have not been to Youth Jam in the past, here’s some basic information:
- Youth Jam is a safe, family friendly event that includes a youth talent showcase and a youth and family focused health and wellness resource fair.
- Youth Jam began in 2008 after a high school senior in Albuquerque completed suicide. Young people in the area came together to think about prevention and decided to form a group, Youth POWER, and host a yearly event, Youth Jam.
- Each of the past 5 Youth Jam Events have had 300-500 attendees.
- Each of the past 5 Youth Jams have had 30-50 community agencies and resources present to share information with the youth, families, and community members who attended at the event.
We need your help to make Youth Jam 2014 a success. Here’s what you can do:
- Donate money or prizes. The county funds the primary elements of the event, but all the perks, like prizes, food, and incentives for youth participation are up to the community. If you don’t have funds to offer, we accept gift cards (small increments at youth friendly restaurants are very popular) or other items that can be used as prizes. To donate, fill out the attached form, or contact Sarah at words...@gmail.com or 505-610-8295.
- Sign up to host a table. Your organization will have fun meeting with and sharing your offerings with the youth and families at Youth Jam. It’s absolutely free for you to have a table. All you have to do is email Sarah.
- Sign up to host an activity. Activities could include an exercise demonstration (yoga, hula hooping, cross fit, etc), a natural healing technique (polarity, shoulder massage, etc), an educational game, or anything you have to offer that might be a fun way for our community to learn about health and wellness.
- Promote the event with all the people you work with. The save the date flyer is attached. Printed copies can be obtained by emailing Sarah your mailing address. When the event flyer is ready, we will ask you to share that, too.
- Come to the event! Showing up to support young people in positive endeavors is one of the most powerful actions adults can take!
- Like the Youth POWER page on Facebook and share information on your own wall to spread the word!
- Share this email with other individuals and agencies who might like to donate or be involved.
Looking forward to your partnership in making this the most awesome Youth Jam yet!
