
Mumbai, Nov 30: Five coaches of the Deccan Queen
train were burnt and over 90 buses damaged in various parts of
this city during violent protests on Thursday against the alleged
desecration of B R Ambedkar`s statue in Kanpur.
Soon after burning the Deccan Queen train, the protesters also torched another local train in Ulhasnagar area.
"Five coaches of the Pune-Mumbai Deccan Queen were burnt
by protestors at Ulhasnagar during a "rail roko" this
afternoon," a Central Railway spokesperson told a news agency here. No
one was injured in the incident, he said.
According to reports, the protestors asked people to get
out of the train before setting the coaches on fire.
Incidents of stone pelting were reported from Trombay,
Chembur, Kurla, Bhandup, Mulund and Navghar in northeast
Mumbai. There were also stone pelting incidents at Kherwadi,
Kurar, Bandra`s Pali Hill and Goregaon in northwest Mumbai,
police said.
Buses of the BrihanMumbai Electric Supply and Transport
(BEST) were being targeted specifically by protestors, who
were pelting stones during rasta rokos, police said.
Protestors from Dalit groups organised rail rokos at
Bhandup and Airoli stations on the Central Railway Line in the
morning, affecting services briefly, a spokesperson said.
Curfew imposed
Curfew was imposed in parts of three
districts in Maharashtra as violent protests by Dalits over
the alleged desecration of Ambedkar`s statue continued for the second day.
Curfew was imposed in Nanded town of Marathwada
region, Pimpri in Pune and Nandurbar town of north Maharashtra
following protests against the vandalisation of the statue
yesterday, police said.
In Mumbai, suburban train services were affected in
parts of the city as protestors squatted on the tracks. Shops
and establishments in parts of the city were also closed in
view of the protest, police said.
In Nanded, authorities imposed curfew from 5 am as a
"precautionary" measure in view of yesterday`s violent protest
in the town.
Curfew was clamped in 14 localities of Pune`s Pimpri-
Nigdi areas due to violence there yesterday.
Over 50 private vehicles were stoned and set ablaze and
shops and business establishment were targeted in the Pimpri
area yesterday. Protestors also tried to set ablaze police and
fire brigade vehicles.
Two policemen were injured in stone throwing at Pimpri
while two drivers were hurt in violence at Swargate area of
Pune yesterday.
In Nandurbar town, curfew was imposed and extra police
forces deployed after a protest march by Dalit organisations
turned violent. Twenty-four people were injured in the
violence, police said.
In Nashik district, Dalit activists tried to set afire a
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus in Ambad
area, police said.
In Mumbai, incidents of stone pelting and protestors
setting up road blocks were reported in suburbs like Kanjur
Marg, Mulund, Bhandup, Navghar, Chembur, Kurar and Worli,
police said.
