Hey,

i am moving to Berlin. I have 10 years experience but wondering if it wil be hard to get a job if i have no German ??

I was told that Berlin is the only place in Germany where you can get by without German.

Hey Gerard,

sorry your first mail didn't get approved in time and now is somehow gone.

Anyway: Welcome to Berlin!

Regarding your question: Yes, there's a growing community of non-German techies here in Berlin. The scene with the most growth is the startup scene - high energy, high speed but also high risk and low payment (mostly). If you'd be interested in that: http://berlinstartupjobs.com
Finding jobs in the non-startup-community is a bit harder but using LinkedIn or the German clone XING it should be possible.

Regarding German: Yes, I know a lot of non-natives who get along very easy in Berlin without speaking any word of German. In fact this is becoming more and more a problem since they don't need to learn the language to get through the day - so they don't.

Feel free to ask more questions, we'll try to help.

- Stefan

Good Point.

I just read this and cried ! It paints a not so good picture for Englsh speakers in Berlin.

i am moving to Berlin because my partner has a job as a neuroscient in a lab there as a Post Doc.
I am also glad to be leaving Sweden. Its cold and and a bit of lonely place i feel. Happy to be gong somewhere with more of a vibe and otgoing people.
I am very outgoing generally.

I am 41 and have worked in It for 10 years in London mostly.
I am an Australian, but speak Spanish also.

Work skills.
Mostly c# in enterprise projects for banks, energy and pharma.

But more lately in web projects with michy less experience programmers and highly agile.
Currently i am systems architect at a games company in Stockholm with 22 people and 3 teams.
I work acros the tams as well as on strategy and network and hardware infrastructure.
i am very much an all rounder, but still code basically.

So i love responsibility as i have gotten used to it and have allot of experience across the board.

Skills:
c#, sql, javascript, SQL and No Sql. ORM, Messaging. Have used lots of stuff over the years.
I still code but am involved in running trams both in house and outsourced allot and working through requirements through to technical.
I have used Redis an CouchDB also.

i developed my own CMS which i later sold to another company to take over. It was c# based but ran on Mono also.

CV is Here:

Contact details there too :)

Glad to hear its possible to get by without German...

I work for a startup now. Its fun and i get paid 40 euros an hour currently. My role is strategic mostly as a Systems Architect managing 3 teams and the global deisng and steering the ship strategically. I code every few days also when required to roll sleeves up to mentor developers,
