We are three weeks away from the kick off of the eat local month.  I feel like we need to better define what we are doing and start drafting Tuesday note and community meeting announcements so that folks are aware of what is happening.  If you are interested in participating in a conversation/meeting to set this up, please let me know and we can find a time that works for all (hopefully).

Does anyone know which class is doing soups on may 28th? I think it is Air but not sure.  We need to make sure that it will work for that teacher to make local soups.

Thanks,
Rebecca

P.S. Please excuse the typos.  Auto-spell often doesn't do a good job reading my mind.

I'm glad to help. Here's my general thought on some possible Tuesday Note content...

April 23 note: explain what eating local means and it's benefits, Farmer's Market tours on the 30th
April 30 note: resources for planting/gardening; plug the Berkeley Crop Swap on May 4
May 7: Resources for buying local; mention cooking with kids May 10 (or 17?) and bites available at pick up
May 14: carbon/environmental impact of eating local?
May 21: explore another aspect/benefit of eating local food
May 28: plug final event of using local food for Soup's On

Obviously, just my suggestions, but hopefully it can help as a starting point.

Best,
Sarah

I spoke with Tamsen some this morning and we thought it might be helpful to come to the staff meeting or have Seema represent the Green Team at the staff meeting to talk to the teachers about ways to tie in eat local with the current curriculum in the classrooms.  Seema, do you feel like you can take this on or what should we do to get on the agenda at the staff meeting?

I think having the classroom tie ins, the Tuesday note ideas presented by Sarah, the "out of the box" cooking afternoon, farmer's market tour, local soup's on and local food at the family fun night will come together as a good eat local month at BH.  Tamsen and I spoke about talking with Osmary in afterschool about encouraging families who come to the family fun night on May 24th to either bring a pizza (as tradition calls for) or a local salad or side dish.  This way we can tie in the local theme to an existing, well attended event.

I would like to move forward with the "out of the box" cooking afternoon on May10th and I will coordinate with Kasia for this.

Let me know if folks have other thoughts.

-I will speak to the staff today about the eat local curriculum.
-Air class already makes a local soup for soups on.  we make it with fresh veggies from our full belly trip.  we make a veg soup and will make the stalk a couple days before.  Amir's mom, Maya will also supply some local veggies to add to the soup.
