A significant number of people who have been in an accident actually need to be convinced that they are injured. It seems that all we ever hear about are the people who fake injuries for the sake of financial gain. The other side of the coin is that there are many people who have injuries and will refuse care because they do not want to be viewed as one who exaggerates or makes up injuries for financial compensation.
Time constraints on minor injuries
A common myth regarding car accident injuries is that sprain or strain type injuries and should be healed or resolved within 6-12 weeks. Every person is different. We often hear about professional athletes being listed as "out" for 6 to 12 weeks for ankle injuries or shoulder sprains. What the average person does not consider is that professional athletes get intensive treatments around the clock.
Additionally, it is totally unreasonable for a person in their fifties to heal at the same rate as a trained athlete. However, many in the public not only believe this, they often repeat it to friends, family members, and coworkers; perpetuating the myth. The top chiropractors in Charlotte will tell you that you will experience immediate pain relief and successful healing with individualized treatment that is pain free and natural, but treatment plan and healing will vary from patient to patient. It is important to remember that foregoing treatment can allow simple injuries to develop into a worse condition.
If the vehicle is not damaged, you cannot be seriously injured
This myth is built upon the false premise that car accident injuries are serious in proportion to the amount of damage to a car. A lot of people take that to mean that if the car has only minor damage, the accident victims cannot be seriously injured.
With crash test improvements in car design, low impact collisions are going to reveal little damage. Numerous studies have been performed and none have been able to make a direct correlation linking degree of car damage to severity of injury.
If you do not feel pain, you have not been injured
Another errant myth is that if you don't feel pain within 72 hours after the accident, you are not really injured. The reality is that a significant number of people do not feel pain after a car accident within the first 72 hours. In fact, sometimes it can take weeks or even months before you start feeling all of your symptoms. There are a number of reasons for this.
First, we can suffer from a mild form of shock that is designed to protect us from severe pain in traumatic situations. Secondly, when we are injured, inflammation will build up over time, and the pain will become evident. Additionally, many people may "take it easy" for a week or two after an accident. When they return to normal activity, they eventually realize that they experience a great deal of pain with normal activities.
