Looks like tomorrow night's meeting will be focused on 3D printing again.  A new guy from York emailed me and is working on building a mini-RepRap Huxley that he'd like to bring so I can help him get it working.  So I'll bring my RepRap to show him.  I'm thinking I'll also bring my MakerBot because I just got the new Mk6 Extruder kit so I can work on assembling it at the meeting.  While I'm at it, I think I'll also bring my whiteAnt mini CNC/3D printer I'm working on that's almost finished for the book Printing in Plastic http://www.amazon.com/Printing-Plastic-Printer-Technology-Action/dp/1430234431

I have been working on a project for a while now, but seem to be running into dead ends on a regular basis.  Do any of you have any experience using MIDI (music instrument digital interface) under Windows?

Read on if you have any MIDI knowledge and might be able to help.

Here is some background;  I do puppetry as a serious hobby and have been working on a show that I want to perform in front of a projection screen.  To trigger the video and sound effects, I was going to put it on PowerPoint, and use a PowerPoint remote that I have.  But, here is the complication... I also want to turn lights on and off using the DMX standard used in theater dimmers.

I have the USB-to-DMX interface.  To send out the DMX signal, I am using a separate program. I had hoped to trigger the second program by using a MIDI signal generated by a file embedded in a PowerPoint slide.  Here is the dead end I ran into. While PowerPoint will load and run MIDI files, it will not send the MIDI information to anything but the internal Windows media player.  So, I cannot capture the MIDI  data to trigger the lighting program.

I recently tried the OpenOffice Impress, which is equivalent to PowerPoint. It will also play MIDI files, and I had hoped that it would behave differently from PowerPoint.  I have been using the program MIDI Yoke and MIDI-OX to see the MIDI as it is processed, but neither will show anything. Even if I use a separate MIDI sequencer, I cannot see any MIDI activity.  So, I must be doing something wrong.

I think we'll be ok, I can put some of it in my office.  Also: I got my MakerBot Thing-o-Matic kit in the mail today!  So I'll bring that to work on assembling instead of just the extruder.

Hey Rich, you might want to get one of these for the CNC board you got:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CNC-TB6560-stepper-motor-driver-I-O-Limits-Cable-E-stop-/330425439925?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ceee416b5&x=54&y=4#ht_500wt_879

That will give you a nicer connection to the socket on the board for the end stops and he also says he'll include directions on how to wire up the switches.

I had a great time at the meeting last night. Thank you to everyone
in the group. You were all so welcoming and helpful.

It was amazing to see the 3D printers in action. My wife loves the
snowflakes that Tony printed for her.

Thanks, it was great meeting you and your wife.  Hopefully you'll be able to start printing your own snowflakes soon!
