Hey all!

This is really important, so please read all of it:

At Monday's membership meeting, we discussed the need to change our name. In case you couldn't make it, there are two main reasons for this:
1. Having "cooperative" in our name has legal implications that our organizational structure doesn't reflect right now. In other words, we can't legally incorporate as the "Berkeley Student Food Cooperative."
2. Representatives from the Berkeley Student Cooperative agreed to be our fiscal sponsor, but they requested that we change our name, because "Berkeley Student Food Cooperative" is too similar to to theirs.

Berkeley Student Food Collective was proposed at the meeting as our new name, and we notified everyone that membership would vote on it online. But because there's no alternative suggestion, and because a lot of really important things (our Articles of Incorporation, our logo, fliers for welcome week, etc.) are contingent on deciding a name, the Steering Committee would like to move along with changing it. If you have any objections, please email our membership coordinator, Kaela Colwell (kaelac...@gmail.com), with why you object and whether your objection is minor or major.

A summation of arguments on both sides:

Reasons why the word "collective" is a good choice
- It's a broad term that can describe our organization in all of the things it does (until we open a co-op)
- It's more descriptive of who we are/what our organization is right now
- It succeeds in distinguishing the organization (the collective) from the project it's working on (the cooperative)
- "Collective" is the closest word to cooperative in terms of shared meaning

Reasons why the word "collective" is not a good choice
- It may imply an organizational structure that we don't have
- People know us as the Berkeley Student Food Cooperative; it might be confusing
- We may not want to distinguish between the co-op we're opening and the organization

Again, if you have any objections to changing out name to the Berkeley Student Food Collective, please email them to Kaela (kaelac...@gmail.com)! This is a big decision and we want to hear what you have to say!

Love,
Laura

Oh and one more thing—please let us know if you have any objections by Friday night at 11:59 pm so that we can get our welcome week materials out on time!

Thanks, and sorry for multiple emails!
