1.  Saturday, 9th March - 27th April, 9:00am - 12:00pm - Singapore Flag Football 8on8 League

Following the very successful running of the Singapore Flag Football Association's 5on5 League, a new 8on8 League will begin this month on March 9. It will run from March 9 to April 20. The Cal club was a sponsor of the 5on5 league and this format would be a great way to prep a team for our annual Cal-Stanford alumni Singapore Ax Game.

Unlike the 5s format, the 8s will allow contact for blocking and bumping but not for tackling. However, women can not be physically blocked or bumped at all times. The 8on8 format requires more specialized players as there is a dedicated line, linebackers, running backs, etc. This is an excellent format for trying out football for the first time, further developing individual position skills and learning about strategy.

Microsoft Operations Auditorium (Level 21)
1 Marina Boulevard, Singapore 018989

Moderator: Ravi Agarwal

Innovation is more than just a buzzword. It’s a competitive advantage and it’s a complex undertaking that requires an investment of time and resources. Real innovation – the kind of breakthrough innovation that warrants a Harvard Business Review case study – requires the right people in the right place…and a culture that channels creativity, stimulates entrepreneurship and encourages teamwork. Join our panel as they discuss the key roadblocks to innovation (and how to address them) and how an innovative culture can be fostered.

The panel will tackle timely topics including:

  • What are the key roadblocks for innovation to succeed? How do companies address these roadblocks?
  • How to create innovative culture/DNA in a traditional large firm?
  • How can companies leverage Asia as a platform for globalizing innovation?

The event will conclude with an interactive Q&A followed by networking cocktails.

Panel Members:

Ken Wye Saw is vice president public sector (Asia) for Microsoft. He is responsible for Microsoft’s business with government and government organizations across Asia. He helps governments embrace and use technology to improve business efficiencies, develop local industries and improve overall national competitiveness. Prior to this role, Ken was the president for Southeast Asia for two years and had held direct responsibilities for providing strategic direction with Microsoft’s marketing, sales, operational and business development efforts in emerging markets.

Joe Listro leads the Procter & Gamble (P&G) global prestige beauty & salon professional R&D programs, as well as the global companywide flavor & fragrance R&D efforts. He has been with P&G for 27 years and has led innovations in several categories that have resulted in growth for many of the company’s most successful brands.

Rex Widmer is a passionate advocate of emerging markets innovation at GE Healthcare. In his current role, Rex is the general manager of a small start-up within GE’s ultrasound business developing solutions designed for new users in emerging markets. From 2009 to 2012, as the director of GE Healthcare’s Rural Health Initiative, Rex was responsible for the design, development and deployment of medical devices uniquely suited for low-resource rural settings of the developing world. Rex’s 13 years with GE have been global serving in a variety of functions for GE Plastics, GE Water and GE Healthcare.

Steve Leonard is a senior vice president of EMC Corporation and a member of the Office of the Chairman. With reported revenues of US$20 billion in FY2011 and employing more than 53,000 people worldwide, EMC is a global leader in enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations by delivering IT-as-a-Service. During his 28 years in the industry, Leonard has lived and worked in Asia or Europe for a total of 23 years

10. Sunday, 24th March, 6:00pm - 8:00pm - A Conversation on Singapore's Population Policy with Dr. Paul Cheung and Prof. Linda Lim - Organized by the University of Michigan Alumni in Singapore

The single most important issue facing Singapore today is its population—arguably too slowly-growing indigenously to maintain a desired rate of economic growth, too densely-packed for environmental and social sustainability, too dependent on large-scale foreign inputs for cultural and political comfort, and so on. Few experts are as well-qualified to comment on the subject from independent perspectives than Paul Cheung and Linda Lim, both Singaporean alumni of the University of Michigan

This UMAS session will feature brief comments by Linda on economic aspects, and Paul on social aspects, of Singapore’s population policy, including the recently-released White Paper on Singapore’s Population. Their comments will be followed by Q&A and open discussion.
