9. Saturday, 11 May 2013, 5.15 pm – King’s College London Singapore Society Trend Talk Series: Part I “The 13th Malaysian Elections – Impact on the Malaysian political & social environment and possible effects on Singapore”

The Malaysian 13th General Election is going to be by far the one with most at stake for Najib, Anwar and Mahathir. There is the possibility that if Najib (who is Singapore friendly) does not win by a big majority, he will be replaced. If that is the case, Singapore’s relations with Malaysia may be strained. If the opposition wins and forms the government, then many politicians and past ministers may be pulled to face justice including Mahathir himself.

Malaysia today is unlike five years ago. The mass protests by the Bersih Movement (Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections) as well as the Green Movement (Himpunan Hijau) are examples of the simmering changes that threaten the country’s stability. However, a stable Malaysia is very important to Singapore in view of its proximity and the global economic uncertainties. Malaysia is Singapore’s largest trading partner with total trade amounting to S$112 billion in 2011.

We hope you can join us for this closed door talk, discussion and networking session.
