7. Book Reading-- Floating on a Malayan Breeze: Travels in Malaysia and Singapore by Sudhir Vadaketh

The Berkeley Club of Singapore, Harvard Club of Singapore and the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore are pleased to host a reading and discussion for "Floating on a Malayan Breeze: Travels in Malaysia and Singapore", written by Berkeley and Harvard alum Sudhir Thomas Vadaketh.

"One of the best, and certainly one of the most enjoyable, single-volume introductions to both countries' politics, economies and societies, and to their delicate sibling relationship--part envy, part rivalry, part affection."
- Simon Long, "Banyan", Asia columnist, The Economist

Description of the book:
What happens after a country breaks apart? Forty-seven years ago Singapore separated from Malaysia. Since then, the two countries have developed along their own paths. Malaysia has given preference to the Malay Muslim majority. Singapore, meanwhile, has tried to build a meritocracy — ostensibly colour-blind — yet perhaps more encouraging to some than others.

How have these policies affected ordinary people? How do these two divergent nations now see each other and the world around them?

Seeking answers to these questions, two Singaporeans first spent 30 days cycling through every state in Peninsular Malaysia on a daily budget of RM10 (US$3) each, then many years interviewing hundreds more people. What they found are two countries that have developed economically but are still struggling to find their souls.

10. King’s College London Singapore Society Trend Talk Series: Part I “The 13th Malaysian Elections – Impact on the Malaysian political & social environment and possible effects on

Singapore” - POSTPONED

The 13th Malaysian election is further delayed. However, it must be held by April 2013 at the latest. This is going to be a landmark election, when many issues once considered unthinkable will surface to have an impact on the future political and social landscape of Malaysia. For example, "freedom" of religion for the Muslims was raised by Anwar Ibrahim's daughter Nurul Izzah (PKR vice-president) and there is the possibility that the current ruling Barisan National (BN) component parties in Sabah will shift alliance to the opposition camp (e.g. UPKO had admitted there had been internal discussion on this issue.)

It is only after the election, that a clearer picture can emerge on the political and social changes that are currently taking place in Malaysia. The Trend Talk Part I “The 13th Malaysian Elections – Impact on the Malaysian political & social environment and possible effects on Singapore” by Dr. Farish Ahmad Noor is therefore postponed until after the elections. We will update you on the new date of the talk as soon as possible.

11.  King’s College London Singapore Society Trend Talk Series: Part II “Singapore and Malaysian Economy – and the possible economic effects on Singapore from the 13th Malaysian Elections”

Singapore is restructuring its economy by incorporating Iskandar Malaysia in its joint economic development. For example, in October, Ascendas and UEM jointly announced the development of a 519 acres, freehold integrated Tech Park in Gerbang Nusajaya. This will be one of the world’s largest integrated tech park which will not only cater to various industries including electronics, pharmaceutical & medical devices, food processing, precision engineering, fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs), logistics & warehousing and general engineering services; but will also support lifestyle and social amenities including training facilities, dormitories, F&B outlets as well as fitness, sports and retail facilities.

Australia recently published a white paper “Australia in the Asian Century” which acknowledges the rise of Asia and its continued growth. The Singapore-Iskandar project is just one such important strategic node in the Asian Century of China-India-Indonesia growth regions. There are other joint projects that help to pull global investment to this part of the world.

We hope you can join us for this closed door talk, discussion and networking session.
