1. Saturday, 11 May 2013, 5.15 pm – King’s College London Singapore Society Trend Talk Series: Part I “The 13th Malaysian Elections – Impact on the Malaysian political & social environment and possible effects on Singapore”
The
Malaysian 13th General Election is going to be by far the one with most
at stake for Najib, Anwar and Mahathir. There is the possibility that
if Najib (who is Singapore friendly) does not win by a big majority, he
will be replaced. If that is the case, Singapore’s relations with
Malaysia may be strained. If the opposition wins and forms the
government, then many politicians and past ministers may be pulled to
face justice including Mahathir himself.
Malaysia
today is unlike five years ago. The mass protests by the Bersih
Movement (Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections) as well as the Green
Movement (Himpunan Hijau) are examples of the simmering changes that
threaten the country’s stability. However, a stable Malaysia is very
important to Singapore in view of its proximity and the global economic
uncertainties. Malaysia is Singapore’s largest trading partner with
total trade amounting to S$112 billion in 2011.
We hope you can join us for this closed door talk, discussion and networking session.

2. Monday, 13th May, 6:30pm - Rise of China: A Different Kind of Superpower than America?
Join
the Harvard Club of Singapore for a refreshingly different talk given
by Harvard alumnus Jung-kyu Kim, author of the upcoming book The Great Equal Society: Confucianism, China, and the 21st Century.
Rise of China: A Different Kind of Superpower than America?
Venue: Tower Club (Singapore)
Date: 13 May 2013 (tentative)
Time: 6:30pm
Cost: $38/person includes buffet & drinks
Synopsis: Many
Western observers regard the rise of China as a threat, not only
because of what it means to the hegemonic status of the United States in
world politics, but also because of what they see as the ideological
incompatibility of China with the value systems of the West. Some
scholars of international relations even suggest that a collision
between a status quo power and a rising power is inevitable.
But things don’t have to be that way, argues Jung-kyu Kim in his paradigm-shifting new book The Great Equal Society.
In fact, it is quite possible to envision a future in which the rest of
the world cheers as China rediscovers its historical dominance and
pre-eminence. Rather than become just another America (or even worse,
three or Americas combined) – with its materialist values, military
expansionism, and environmental degradation – China can seize on the
Confucian vision to become a new kind of superpower, a beacon of hope
for mankind in the 21st century.
About the Speaker:
Jung-kyu
Kim serves as director of ACA Investments, a private equity firm
affiliated with Sumitomo Corporation. He has advised investments in
clean technology, media, IT, and healthcare, and chaired and spoken at
several regional private equity conferences. He started his career at
the Tokyo office of McKinsey & Company. He received a B.A. in
Government from Harvard University and an MBA from INSEAD. He co-wrote The Great Equal Society with
Dr Young-oak Kim, the leading public intellectual in Korea whose books
on Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism have sold over 2.5m copies.
