In today’s global marketplace, cultural
intelligence is a critical skill for leaders and managers to work
effectively across a variety of cultural contexts and with an
increasingly diverse workforce. A leadership team with high cultural
intelligence can cultivate success by effectively managing a diverse workforce. Join panel host David Barker
as he delves into how companies can increase their understanding and awareness
of cultural intelligence capabilities (how to lead, how to think, how to deal
with diverse internal/external stakeholders) and translate those capabilities
into tangible organizational outcomes.
The panel will tackle timely
topics including:
Why do some managers flourish when they venture into new
cultures, while other managers flounder?
How leadership will look in the
future and how different will it be from leadership in the past? What will change? What
will not change?
What are the key challenges in multi-cultural teams? How to
optimize performance for multi-cultural teams?
How can “Cultural Quotient”
lead to accomplishment of strategic business and organizational
goals?
The event will conclude with an interactive Q&A followed by
networking cocktails.

8. Saturday, 9th March - 27th April, 9:00am - 12:00pm - Singapore Flag Football 8on8 League
Following
the very successful running of the Singapore Flag Football Association's 5on5
League, a new 8on8 League will begin next month on March 9. It will run
from March 9 to April 20. The Cal club was a sponsor of the 5on5 league
and this format would be a great way to prep a team for our annual
Cal-Stanford alumni Singapore Ax Game.
Unlike
the 5s format, the 8s will allow contact for blocking and bumping but
not for tackling. However, women can not be physically blocked or bumped
at all times. The 8on8 format requires more specialized players as
there is a dedicated line, linebackers, running backs, etc. This
is an excellent format for trying out football for the first time,
further developing individual position skills and learning about
strategy.

10. Sunday, 24th March, 6:00pm - 8:00pm - A
Conversation on Singapore's Population Policy with Dr. Paul Cheung and Prof.
Linda Lim - Organized by the
University of Michigan Alumni in Singapore
The
single most important issue facing Singapore today is its
population—arguably too slowly-growing indigenously to maintain a
desired rate of economic growth, too densely-packed for environmental
and social sustainability, too dependent on large-scale foreign inputs
for cultural and political comfort, and so on. Few experts are as
well-qualified to comment on the subject from independent perspectives
than Paul Cheung and Linda Lim, both Singaporean alumni of the
University of Michigan
This
UMAS session will feature brief comments by Linda on economic aspects,
and Paul on social aspects, of Singapore’s population policy, including
the recently-released White Paper on Singapore’s Population. Their comments will be followed by Q&A and open discussion.
Please see attached flyer

12. Hiring Opportunity - Interested in
hiring an intern from Berkeley for the summer at no
cost?
We invite you to consider hosting an
unpaid (free to you) bright, talented and eager undergraduate student
college student intern at your company under the auspices of the Global Summer
Internship Program through Berkeley Study Abroad. This is a 10-week program,
from June 10 – August 16, where UC Berkeley provides professional training for
student interns in addition to customized internship placement through their
global partner the Academic Internship Council (AIC). Student interns are
expected to work a minimum of 25 hours per week, and are required to take
related classes for credit. This year we expect to have approximately 30
students with a broad range of majors. The students must confirm their
participation with us by April 1st, and after that date we will have a list of
students, their profiles and resumes which we can share with prospective
employers. Employers are welcome to set course prerequisites and/or other
selection criteria (such as major or class year) for their prospective interns.
While most students attend UC Berkeley, the program is open to visiting
students. In the past, some Global Internship Program participants have also
come from universities such as Cornell, University of Texas, UC San Diego and
UCLA.
Please contact AIC Singapore Director Ms. Shannah Teo at + 65212820
or sing...@academicinternshipcouncil.org no later than March 15 if you are
interested or would like further information. Thank you in advance for your
consideration.

Singapore

consulting firm, who is going to B-school at the end of the

14. Career Opportunity - Various positions - World Bank Group Competitive
Industries Practice
The developing world needs to create at
least 350 million jobs in the next decade, especially for women and youth, just
to keep pace with the working-age population. Africa will need 11 million new
jobs each year, as its working-age population expands by 30%. South Asia will
see a 20% increase, requiring 14 million new jobs each year. The vast majority
of those jobs will have to come from the private sector. An approach is needed
that will go beyond the macroeconomic reform agenda to identify and address the
real microeconomic barriers to the growth of industries with high economic and
social benefits.
The Competitive Industries (CI) Global
Practice is part of the response. CI will work with World Bank Group (WBG) teams
to develop targeted, multi-year structural reform initiatives to systematically
address critical market failures that stifle industry competitiveness and
innovation and achieve significant private sector growth.
The CI Practice is offering 4 job
positions in the Singapore Office.
I. Job #130341 Senior Private Sector
Specialist for Competitive Industries with at least 8 years of experience
