Dear Berkeley alumni, students and friends,

Please find below the August 2013 update of upcoming events for the Berkeley Club of Singapore (in Blue and Bold) and from our affiliate clubs via DUAL (in Red and Bold).

Please note that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Barbecue will be held this coming Saturday on August 17th at Scotts 28 Condominium. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet other Cal Berkeley family members and to hear (and be heard) about club events this past year. We'll also be taking care of some important club business like electing a new Executive Committee and voting on some changes to our charter. Please RSVP by clicking here and join us for some great food and fun.

Also, if you are interested in being part of a Berkeley team for the DUAL Trivia Challenge / American Association Quiz Night and/or MIT Beaver Cup Bowling Challenge 2013, please email berkeleyclu...@gmail.com. If there is enough interest, we will organize a team.

2.  Saturday, 17th August, 12pm – 4pm – Berkeley Club of Singapore AGM and BBQ

 

Berkeley Club is hosting the second barbecue of the grilling season, but this time, we'll taking care of some club business as well. We'll be grilling up some great food and serving some drinks. Bring you wife/kids/families/better-halves and make it a Blue and Gold Family affair. Mix, mingle, eat and enjoy a great Singapore Summer afternoon with Cal. There will be a large and inviting pool available for those who want to cool down.

 

Come hear what the club has in store for the rest of the year and for the coming year. We will also elect our the next club Exco and vote on some very important matters such as amendments to the constitution and approving the annual financials.


Alumni are requested to show their bbq culinary skills, volunteers needed! Feel free to bring food for the grill, snacks to share and beer to quench your thirst (BYOB).

Please join the MIT Club of Singapore at an evening with the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART).  The guest speaker is Carlo Ratti.

About the speaker: Carlo Ratti

An architect and engineer by training, Carlo Ratti practices in Italy and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he directs the Senseable City Lab. He graduated from the Politecnico di Torino and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, and later earned his MPhil and PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Carlo holds several patents and has co-authored over 250 publications. As well as being a regular contributor to the architecture magazine Domus and the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, he has written for the BBC, La Stampa, Scientific American and The New York Times. His work has been exhibited worldwide at venues such as the Venice Biennale, the Design Museum Barcelona, the Science Museum in London, GAFTA in San Francisco and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Carlo has been featured in Esquire Magazine’s ‘2008 Best & Brightest’ list and in 2010 Blueprint Magazine included him as one of the ‘25 People Who Will Change the World of Design’. Forbes listed him as one of the ‘Names You Need To Know’ in 2011 and Fast Company named him as one of the ’50 Most Influential Designers in America’. He was also featured in Wired Magazine’s ‘Smart List 2012: 50 people who will change the world’. His Digital Water Pavilion at the 2008 World Expo was hailed by Time Magazine as one of the ‘Best Inventions of the Year’.

Carlo has been a presenter at TED 2011, program director at the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, curator of the 2012 BMW Guggenheim Pavilion in Berlin, and was named Inaugural Innovator in Residence by the Queensland Government. He is currently serving as a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Urban Management and is a curator for the Future Food District Pavilion for Expo 2015 in Milan.

About SMART

The Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) is a major research enterprise established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF) in 2007. SMART is the first entity in the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) being developed by NRF.

 

SMART is MIT's first, and to-date only, research centre outside the United States.  It is also MIT's largest international research programme.   MIT faculty members have laboratories at SMART, mentor postdoctoral associates and graduate students, and collaborate with universities, research institutes and industries in Singapore and Asia.

 

Directions

By MRT & NUS Internal Shuttle Bus

·                     Take the Circle Line MRT to Kent Ridge Station (CC24), and exit from the Lower Kent Ridge Road Exit A

·                     Turn right to Lower Kent Ridge Road, Bus Stop 3

·                     Take the NUS Internal Shuttle Bus D2 to CREATE Way

·                     Alight at the 1 CREATE Way bus stop

By Car to CREATE Basement Carpark

·                     Take the AYE and exit Clementi Road

·                     Turn left to NUS Entrance A, Kent Ridge Crescent (by the University Cultural Centre)

·                     Keep going straight until you pass the bus stop

·                     Make a sharp left onto the College Link bridge

·                     Drive ahead and go past the bus stop along CREATE Way

·                     Make a full round at the roundabout so you are pointing in the direction you came. Go straight as the road dips down under the road you came on, till you reach the CREATE Basement Carpark.

·                     If the CREATE Basement Carpark is full, drive a little ahead to the Stephen Riady Centre Basement Carpark.

 

Note: The CREATE carpark is only open to the public from 6.30pm onwards, if you drive and arrive before 6.30pm, please park your car at the Stephen Riady Centre Basement Carpark. 

 

4.  Friday, 23rd August, 7:00pm onwards – PechaKucha Night x INSEAD


PechaKucha Night, a non-profit global sharing and learning event will, for the first time, be collaborating with INSEAD. 20x20 - True to the form of PechaKucha Night, speakers use only 20 images and have only 20 seconds per image to present – six minutes 40 seconds in total, keeping things fast paced.

 

The event will feature accomplished INSEAD alumni and academic staff sharing their insights on innovation, organization, game-changers, communities and even jazz and wine’s link to happiness.

The MIT Club of Singapore is hosting the annual MIT Beaver Cup 2013, a bowling event which promises to be a fun and friendly competition amongst the various alumni clubs of DUAL and Friends of DUAL. Do come join us, either as a bowler or as a cheerleader.

 

The details of the event are as follows:

 

Venue: Singapore Island Country Club bowling alley (180 Island Club Road Singapore 578774 – Upper Thomson)

Date & Time: Sat, October 19th 2013, 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Format: Teams will consist of between 5 to 6 bowlers. Each bowler will bowl two games. Only the top 5 scores from each team will be used.

Cost: $40/bowler; $15/non-bowler

 

Light food and soft drinks will be served during the event, so non-bowlers are also welcome to come along to cheer on their teams, network or just catch up with old friends from the wider DUAL community. Regardless of whether you are forming a team (6-8 teams in total) / bowling individually / attending but not bowling, please RSVP to Yeo Chuo Hao at zuo...@alum.mit.edu.
