Dear Berkeley alumni, students and friends,

Please find below the mid-March 2013 update of upcoming events for the Berkeley Club of Singapore (in Blue and Bold) and from our affiliate clubs via DUAL (in Bold).

We need you to volunteer! The Club will host two informational sessions for admitted and transfer students. As of now, they are both planned for Saturday, April 13. The first event is for NTU engineering undergrads who will participate in an exchange program starting this fall. If you are a graduate of an engineering program from Cal, please come enjoy some food and drinks while you share your Cal engineering experiences with these students. The second event is for admitted Freshmen. If you are a recent alum or the parent of a student at Cal, both students and parents will be attending and are looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks & best regards,
--

1. Sunday, 24th March, 6:00pm - 8:00pm - A Conversation on Singapore's Population Policy with Dr. Paul Cheung and Prof. Linda Lim - Organized by the University of Michigan Alumni in Singapore
The single most important issue facing Singapore today is its population—arguably too slowly-growing indigenously to maintain a desired rate of economic growth, too densely-packed for environmental and social sustainability, too dependent on large-scale foreign inputs for cultural and political comfort, and so on. Few experts are as well-qualified to comment on the subject from independent perspectives than Paul Cheung and Linda Lim, both Singaporean alumni of the University of Michigan

This UMAS session will feature brief comments by Linda on economic aspects, and Paul on social aspects, of Singapore’s population policy, including the recently-released White Paper on Singapore’s Population. Their comments will be followed by Q&A and open discussion.

4.  Saturday, 9th March - 20th April, 9am - 12pm - Singapore Flag Football 8on8 League

Following the very success running of Singapore Flag Football Association's 5on5 League. A new 8on8 League began on March 9. Though it's in full swing, it is still accepting new players. It will run from March 9 to April 20. The Berkeley Club of Singapore is a co-sponsor of this league.

Unlike the 5s format, the 8s will allow contact for blocking and bumping but not for tackling. However, women can not be physically blocked or bumped. The 8on8 format requires more specialized players as there is a dedicated line, linebackers, running backs, etc. This is an excellent format for trying out football for the first time, further developing individual position skills, learning about strategy and experiencing some great teamwork!
