The London School of Economics Alumni Association of Singapore (LSEAAS) and EU Centre jointly invite you to a public lecture by Dr. Razeen Sally (Visiting Associate Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy) on ‘The Political Economy of the Eurozone Crisis: Big Europe vs Small Europe’ at the NUS University Hall Auditorium on 24 August 2012 (Friday) at 4 pm.
Dr Sally will argue that the central set of policy choices the EU faces today – to centralize or decentralize policy – harks back to a debate in the 1950s between “small Europe” and “big Europe” advocates. The euro project, he will argue, is a product of Small Europe; and the euro crisis has put Small Europe thinking in the driving seat.
To attend this event, please register via the EU Centre website,

8. Lehman Brothers: Accounting Magic – Deleveraging, Manipulation & Moral Hazard
As Wall Street’s problems were reaching a crescendo during 2007 and 2008, Lehman Brothers, a prominent New York based investment bank, faced a continuing drain on its cash and reserves. Its debt laden balance sheet, coupled with illiquid assets with uncertain valuations, constrained its ability to borrow or raise new capital. Lehman needed to convince its lenders, investors and government regulators that its position was not as dire as the rumors on the Street suggested. What happened next involved accounting magic that circumvented GAAP requirements and enabled the company to concurrently deleverage and manipulate the presentation of its balance sheet while under the watchful eye of its auditors and government regulators. Join Professor Kreimer as he discusses how Lehman Brothers’ “too big to fail” mentality coupled with a moral hazard mindset led the company down a path of destruction…and why no one was held accountable.

Leading Breakthrough Innovation
Innovation is a powerful engine of growth and transformation. It can create extraordinary wealth for some, but it can also destroy the fortunes of others. In this lecture, Professor Rajesh Chandy will discuss insights from 18 years of research by him and his and co-authors on the drivers of innovation. He will describe how successful innovators take concepts – whether old or new - from one context, and apply them in entirely different technological, market, and geographic contexts. He will then examine the typical responses by industry participants to innovation, and explore why some are able to manage innovation better than others. In particular, he will emphasize the role of leadership and corporate culture in driving innovation, and will explore the impact of innovation in emerging markets.
Chandy’s areas of expertise include innovation, technology management, emerging markets, and marketing strategy. During 2006-2008, he served as a member of the US Secretary of Commerce Advisory Committee on Measuring Innovation in the 21st Century Economy. He serves on the brain trust of the Global Innovation Forum, and has been a member of the American Marketing Association’s Academic Council and its Knowledge Development Coalition.
Chandy’s research and publications have received several awards, including the Journal of Marketing Harold Maynard Award for contributions to marketing theory and thought, the AMA Early Career Award for Contributions to Marketing Strategy, the AMA TechSIG Award for the best article on Technology and Innovation (twice), the MSI Alden Clayton Award for the best dissertation proposal, and the Mary Kay Award for the best marketing dissertation. He has received the AMA Early Career Award for contributions to marketing strategy research, and has been named an MSI Young Scholar.
Chandy is as an Area Editor for the Entrepreneurship and Innovation area at Management Science, and is a current or former member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, International Journal of Research in Marketing, and Marketing Letters.
Fortune magazine described Chandy’s findings on innovation as "an unorthodox and bracing set of management principles." He has received a number of teaching awards, including the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award, the Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Outstanding Faculty Dedication Award. At London Business School, he teaches MBA electives on Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets, and on Managing and Marketing Innovation. Additionally, he is the faculty director of the executive education course on Market Driving Strategies.
Chandy has provided advisory and executive education services to Toshiba, St. Jude Medical, 3M, Philips, Commonwealth Microfinance Limited, American Medical Systems, Deutsche Telekom, Bertelsmann, Hutchinson Technology, Microsoft, Mundipharma, Rexam, Wrigley, GfK, Futuredontics, Telenor, and the US and UK governments, among others.
