3. Saturdays, 5th January to 2nd February, 9am - 12pm - Singapore 5's Flag Football League (Coed, No-Contact)

**IMPORTANT UPDATE: We've expanded the league by 2 teams and it is almost at capacity! If interested, sign-up by December 17!**

The Berkeley Club of Singapore and the Singapore Flag Football Association (SFFA) are hosting the inaugural season of The Singapore 5's, a 5-on-5 Flag Football league, to run through the entire month of January. And with the championship games to be played on Superbowl Weekend, February 2. This is meant to be a friendly but competitive league of people looking for athletic challenges and teamwork. We will play a no-contact and coed version of football. The league is open to both individuals at no charge.

If you've always been curious about American football, this will be a great opportunity to learn. The 5-on-5 format is a quick run and catch version of American football. It doesn't use a line, blocking, or tackles. It is played on a smaller field. It emphasizes the development of strategy, hand skills and speed, not brawn and hard hitting. No prior experience is necessary, and we will run several skills clinics during the season.

About SFFA:

Founded in 2007 by an expat, the SFFA is a group of locals and expats, aged 15 to 55, from all walks of life, religions and races who share nothing except for the love of the game of American Football. We gather weekly to usually play an open format of scrimmage games. We also travel to other countries for direct one-on-one play and for international tournaments. The core of the group is about 30-40 members, but our Facebook group has over 400 members.

More so than in many sports, American football requires highly-coordinated teamwork and sacrifice, with specialized positions and players. We play offense with specialized positions. In any well-designed and well-executed offensive play, only 2-3 players will touch the ball; the success of the play, however, is often more dependent on the actions of the rest of the team than on the actions of those 2-3 players. Likewise, each defensive player will have specific responsibilities that he must perform while trusting that his teammates are in turn taking care of theirs. A team where every player tries to do everything is not a team; the only thing they will do as a team is lose as a team.

Because we place such a strong emphasis on teamwork, and because our ultimate goal is for everyone to have fun playing the game, we discourage any tendency of more-skilled players to seek glory at the expense of another player’s experience. We organized the SFFA with the mindset that everyone who takes the time to come out deserves an equal chance to experience the game. This means everyone will get a chance to play every position, regardless of their skill level.

The association is open for everyone who is interested to learn and experience Flag Football. We look forward for you to be part of our big family. Please join us every Saturday 9:00 AM at our location below:

Date: Saturday, Jan. 5, 9am-12pm: Orientation, trials and "draft"
Saturdays, Jan. 12-26, 9am-12pm: Regular season round-robin games
Saturday, Feb. 2, 9am-12pm: Championship games
Venue: Gan Eng Seng School field (behind Tiong Bahru Park along Henderson Road)

If interested, indicate your experience and preferred position, if any, to: jhs...@cal.berkeley.edu. Please visit the SFFA Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/21135712244/

With escalating regional geopolitical tensions, the world in 2013 is increasingly wraught with uncertainties. Eruption of territorial disputes and China's growing assertiveness in South China Sea have made the region the new flashpoint of Asia. All the while Middle East continues to witness disputes and risks collapsing into a full-blown war. Against the backdrop of regional conflicts, anti-China blowback, Eurozone disintegration and the fiscal cliff, the circumstances behind Singapore's apparent stable growth are still up for debate. As the future remains unclear, how does Singapore continue to thrive in the many variables in the current geopolitical landscape?

Join us in the first installment of LSEAAS Distinguished Speakers Series, where Parag Khanna, noted geo-strategist and LSE alumnus, brings clarity to the issue through a lively dinner discussion.

9. Saturday, 19 January 2013 - King’s College London Singapore Society Trend Talk Series: Part II “Singapore and Malaysian Economy – and the possible economic effects on Singapore from the 13th Malaysian Elections”

Singapore is restructuring its economy by incorporating Iskandar Malaysia in its joint economic development. For example, in October, Ascendas and UEM jointly announced the development of a 519 acres, freehold integrated Tech Park in Gerbang Nusajaya. This will be one of the world’s largest integrated tech park which will not only cater to various industries including electronics, pharmaceutical & medical devices, food processing, precision engineering, fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs), logistics & warehousing and general engineering services; but will also support lifestyle and social amenities including training facilities, dormitories, F&B outlets as well as fitness, sports and retail facilities.

Australia recently published a white paper “Australia in the Asian Century” which acknowledges the rise of Asia and its continued growth. The Singapore-Iskandar project is just one such important strategic node in the Asian Century of China-India-Indonesia growth regions. There are other joint projects that help to pull global investment to this part of the world.

We hope you can join us for this closed door talk, discussion and networking session.
