THE WOMEN (1939) - Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell,
Mary Boland, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Marjorie Main, Virginia
Grey, Ruth Hussey, child actress Virginia Weidler, Cora Witherspoon,
Lucile Watson, and Hedda Hopper. ALL of them are in this film! Starts
with a frenzy of dialogue and never really slows down. Marriage,
divorce, and gossip. Lots and lots of gossip. And catty! This movie is
so catty there should be a scratching post at the theatre's entrance!
Joan Crawford plays a perfume salesgirl who dallies with Norma
Shearer's husband Steven. Their battle for Steven's love is at the
heart of this tale, but since we never meet him (not one man graces a
single frame of this film), we have to take their word that he’s worth
all the trouble. Directed by George Cukor and based on the Clare
Boothe Luce play.
