It is getting close to 23 years since I first passed a Microsoft Certified Professional exam. And I can still remember how intimidated I was taking that first exam, not sure if I had reviewed enough material, still trying things out on my workstation before heading to the test center, to see if I can validate some of the steps in my mammoth study guides (back when I preferred having the actual books).

And here I am, 47+ exams later, still trying to figure out how I can make time to learn it all when there is just so much out there! While most of my work these days is focused on the cloud, there were a lot of concepts from the on-prem world that still remained relevant as I learned their cloud counterparts, esp. from an infrastructure perspective. Once I worked my way up to the top of the stack on-prem, that's where I focused online for newer certs, until I could work my way back down.

Fortunately, there are a lot of training and readiness resources available through the Microsoft Learn platform, including role-based content and learning paths that can get you started on your next certification journey at -us/learn/

Just choose your role, product(s), and skill level to get recommended content right away. Or if you know which certification you want to get, just look for the recommended training available at the bottom of the certification or exam info page. Sample below from Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Solution Architect Expert - Learn Microsoft Docs

Not only do I still see the value of certification after all these years, but our customers and partners do, too! You can learn more from this recent study at Value of IT Certification // Pearson VUE, but it helps validate what I've seen working with customers and partners over the years: certified professionals have more confidence, job satisfaction and opportunities.

Also keep in mind, for Microsoft Partners, cloud competencies and advanced specializations usually require multiple certified professionals on staff familiar with the selected area of specialization. See Competency partners (microsoft.com) and Advanced Specialization (microsoft.com) for more information. Sample below shows how certifications contribute to Silver and Gold Cloud Business Applications competency. Learn more at Cloud Business Applications Competency (microsoft.com)

And this is where I like to refer back to some of the ADKAR concepts I've written about before - going through the training to learn it all is really just the prerequisite to being able to apply that knowledge in a meaningful way wherever you are working. If you don't make time to do the latter - and do it well - you won't really get the full benefit of all that training now will you?

But reading through 500 pages in sufficient detail to understand and inwardly digest what is required is going to take a very long time (I have not done this). And in addition the pages are Microsoft documentation which tends to be quite dry and serves as a reference to those who know the underlying concepts, but are not good at training those concepts.

My background is that I am a SQL Server DBA contractor with 12 years experience. I want to try out a move over into SQL Development work as this seems interesting and absorbing. I have not done exam 7-461 - I thought I would jump in at the deep end and do the more advanced one first - maybe I have been too arrogant and should do that one first. Would doing 70-461 + associated training help with 70-464 ?

What I would say in terms of preparation you are better sitting the first 3 exams which will achieve the MCSA SQL 2012 qualification before considering the 70-464 and 70-465 exams for the MCSE Data Platform qualification.

In terms of study material I found using the following 2 books covered everything you need to know. Depending on how good your T-SQL programming knowledge is several chapters from both books can be ignored.

Transcender does offer some products to help you prepapre, but I would suggest only resorting to these once you are happy you know the material well. If anything this will just help with being prepared for the exam format and roughly the type of questions that will come up.

I generally spent at least a month per exam preparing and that will usually involve reading materials for about 2 hours per day 4 to 5 days a week (a long train commute is ideal for this) and the same again working through examples.

I just passed the 70-461- and 70-462 this month, and am looking for the right study material for 70-763. i limped though 462 by watching videos, and they covered things i don't do on a daily basis, even though i wear the dba hat full time.

Lowell--help us help you! Day to day I support our Data Warehoure \ Marts \ OLTP systems and I found the book made me realise where we can make improvements to how we load our Marts and Facts and also our deployment and monitoring of packages.

To put the exams into context, one of our DBA's that started with us as an associate DBA with zero experience and now has 3 years experience has just passed his final MCSE 2012 data platform exam yesterday. But he has put hundreds of ours into studying and practicing to get to this point.

Not sure whether 70-463 (Implementing a data warehouse) is appropriate for me because I have never worked with OLAP cubes or BI stuff. So it may be difficult to understand without the experience in it.

I wasn't looking forward to 70-463 as its not something I excel at, but the training provider I use Firebrand[/url] are amazing and the use of the 70-463 training book and the MeasureUp practice tests help drive home the detail.

This is the first place I go when studying for an exam. The objectives shown in the screen shot break out into sub-objectives. Each sub-objective has a set of skills listed in paragraph form. I break out every skill that is listed into an Excel spreadsheet or a table in OneNote. This becomes my study guide. I make sure I understand the details of each skill in the list. This is, of course, a pretty fair bit of work, but it is better than not having any idea what to study. While you will encounter questions on skills not listed in the page, I have never failed an exam for which I was comfortable with this skill list.

As a Microsoft Certified Trainer, I have experience collecting and assessing which resources are the best for learners to get the most out of. Here are my top 3 recommendations for Microsoft study material:

Online Resources: An undervalued study resource for Microsoft exams is Microsoft Support (or MSDN for developers). Microsoft publishes pretty much everything about everything Microsoft on TechNet and MSDN, so it is highly likely that any technical details that can be asked are covered in TechNet. Of course, the downside is that there are often thousands of pages on a given subject, so the enormity of information can make TechNet seem unusable. That is where having a list of skills comes in.

With all due respect to a certain former professional basketball player, practice matters. It is important to actually set up and manage a system that you are taking a certification exam on. Likewise, it is important to develop some test-taking skills and have some understanding of what to expect when taking an exam.

At this point, you are probably ready to either laugh at me or hunt me down. I have spent paragraphs going over how difficult Microsoft exams are, and now I am telling you to relax. Seriously? Seriously. It is possible to pass Microsoft exams, and occasionally even pass them on the first try. When you finally get in to take an exam, there are a few things to remember:
