Microsofts "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" could be used to help fix broken installations of MSI-installer based products. When the installer failed in some strange way and left corrupt data behind, so bad that even Add/Remove Programs couldn't help, you could often fix things by running this utility and then running the application's installer again.

I just discovered that Microsoft announced a couple weeks ago that they were discontinuing this utility. They didn't merely say "we're not supporting it anymore"; they seemingly removed it from their site entirely.

I have to support a Windows program for a whole bunch of users. Given the number of users, every so often something will go wrong, and this program has been invaluable for me, as a last-ditch line of defense.

Windows Installer CleanUp utility was never intended to be used in the wild. It was only meant to be used by software developers. If you occasionally have end users needing to use WCU you have some serious installer quality issues that should be addressed.

WCU only removes the Windows Instaleller meta data and doesn't actually uninstall any software. This leaves the machine in a very dirty state. These days with test labs becoming virtualized there's no reason to have this tool anymore. You just roll back to a prior snapshot and keep on working.

I've seen all kinds of online forums full of users who think they know what they are doing ( and don't ) suggest using WCU to solve various problems so in the end Microsoft decided to try to get the horse back in the barn.

Windows 10 does not provide an Installer Cleanup utility. Windows Installer Cleanup utility is available for earlier systems. Microsoft replaced it with the Microsoft Fixit utility for newer systems but also discontinued it.

You should not delete files from C:\Windows Installer. The C:\Windows\Installer folder contains the Windows Installer cache, which stores important files for applications installed using Windows Installer technology.

NOTE: The "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" mentioned in this post is no longer available at the link in this post. Please read the rest of the thread for alternate download locations and alternate suggestions.

Sometimes, after installation, when you try to start a program such as the Sequence Editor, the program will not start, and instead a message will pop up, saying:

This typically is because Windows is confused about what is, and what is not, installed. For situations like this, Microsoft has made a tool called the "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility". It can be found, along with directions, at the following location:

Please refer to that page for how to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, but here's the basic idea:

(1) Download the installer for the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from that web page.

(2) Close all of your running programs, especially LOR programs (if any are running), including not just things like the Sequence Editor, but also the LOR Control Panel (the light bulb icon in your computer's system tray).

(3) Run the installer for the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

(4) After it installs, run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility itself.

(5) It will present you with a list of installed programs. Select any and all "Light-O-Rama" programs, and tell it to clean them up.

(6) Close the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

I had all the fore mentioned problems. What I did to get LOR to work was to delete everything LOR and start from scratch. I also ran LOR registry wipe and windows install clean up program. When my computer was empty of LOR, I down loaded LOR 2.5.6 and followed the instructions and now I'am a happy guy, it all works so far.

I have removed a reply from this thread, which seems to be regarding a different installation issue, and moved it to its own thread in the LOR 2 forum. I will send a PM to the person who posted it momentarily, so that he or she knows where to find it.

Please limit replies to threads in the "Troubleshooting FAQs" section to those specifically related to the problem that the thread is about, so as to keep the thread concise and helpful for its specific problem. Thanks!

Ok, I have windows 7 on a new computer, and until I install update 2.7.6 everything works. After installing update 2.7.6 I get thew can not find light-o-rama.msi file. I have uninstalled and re-installed 3 times and the same thing happens. The windows link to windows clean up, on longer is avalable. Now hat do I do.

And here's "Absolute Uninstaller", which is a more specific piece of software from Glarysoft (as opposed to Glary Utilities, which seems to be a whole bunch of different unrelated tools including an uninstaller):

-uninstaller/

I am running windows 2000 on my LOR pc. I went to upgrade to 2.8.12 from 2.8.10 and I got an error message saying network resource is unavailable. I tried it a few times and the same thing. So I tried to uninstall LOR would not uninstall. I tried to run all the different programs that Bob suggested but none of them would work. I deleted anything LOR in the registry that I could find. But it sill wouldn't uninstall. I must be missing something.

Also I upgrade LOR on my laptop running windows 7 and it worked fine.

Thanks,

Steve

When you try to uninstall the program, are you running the 8.10 installer -2.8.10.exe and choosing remove?

Edit: The original (no longer supported by windows) Windows cleanup program can be found here:

Hi Bob, although Microsoft has discontinued the Installer Cleanup Utility, they have not required download sites to remove it, so anyone who needs it can get it from Major Geeks _Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html

I just cleaned up 1.2 GB of orphaned cached Windows Installer data files from my C drive. These files are stored in C:\WINDOWS\Installer, and have registry keys that are attached to them. Not all C:\WINDOWS\Installer are to be removed, but sometimes when a windows installer fails, there are orphaned files that are left and a new instant of the same installer created a new folder instead of reuse/cleanup of the old files.

The only method that I currently know that safely removes the orphaned files are using "MSIZAP G" (G is a switch that needs to be passed to the command prompt command). msizap.exe is part of Windows Installer Clean Up utility that could be obtained from Microsoft

** I WOULD NOT RECOMAND USING WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEAN UP GUI ** since most users might end up removing windows installers that would be necessary for future maintenance of the applications, but do recommend using the msizap.exe with the G switch to remove the orphaned installers. Note that the GUI does not have an option for removing the orphaned files (or at least I didn't find it).
