Summer 2015

Greetings everyone! We had a great time at our 4th annual mini meet last month with over 30 participants enjoying the pool and then the sights in our community.

Our workouts have transitioned towards longer sets but include a good challenge set thrown in for some fun! I am planning on more lake swims this summer when the water gets a bit warmer ... more info to come on that. I plan to also work on some Open Water swim strategies for anyone looking to compete in any swims or triathlons. Be sure to invite someone that you know who might benefit from our fun. 

A quick note about Saturday workouts. At this time the Marauders are not practicing on the weekend so we have access to the pool as early as 9am! In talking with Carrie, there is also an adjustment that needs to be made for 5/30 - the pool will be unavailable at 10:30, so you will need to swim early next weekend. As for this weekend, I will be at the pool early so that I can get out and enjoy Mayfest as we head into the holiday.

Hello again! Summertime brings about changes in schedules and also more opportunities to explore. A quick note that the Rec will be closed Friday and Saturday (7/3 + 7/4). Also, there are home swim meets the next few Tuesdays, so I will be offering some alternatives to keep us in the water. As for the holiday weekend ...

Greg and Rachel will be swimming at Lake Raponda (Wilmington) this evening at 5:15pm. Follow the road on the east side of the lake about 2/3 way up to the parking area on the right and the town beach on the left. It may still be chilly there for some, so consider bringing a wetsuit. Note that there are powerboats on the water so extra care should be made to stay together, and a bright cap never hurts as you stay near the shore.

On Saturday I will be swimming at Lake Paren at 8:30am. After the rain this week it should also be cool, so a wetsuit may be in order. Meet at the main beach by the lifeguard chair for an early dip before they open and then we can spend the rest of the day as we please.

Also, lots of great theater is getting into full swing - Lena and I watched "Thoreau, Or Return to Walden" in Stockbridge and it was excellent! Williamstown, Dorset, Weston, Hubbard Hall, and of course OldCastle provide some great outings. 

I  will plan to see some of you on Saturday. :)

Summer swimming is in full swing. That means a couple of notes...

The Marauders have home meets Tues July 7 and 14 @4pm, and Saturday July 18 @9am. Accordingly, plan to not practice :(

Our Tuesday night times have not changed, but Saturday has moved to 9am. I confirmed with Carrie today that there will be a guard there at 9am this weekend. I will have a workout waiting for you.

Finally, we are planning on a swim at Lake Raponda this Thursday at 6pm. If you have not yet splashed here I encourage you to join us. Carpool will be leaving the Rec Center parking lot at 5:30, or you can meet us there. If you have a wetsuit bring it along.

On a side note, I hopped into the outdoor 25 yard pool in Hoosick Falls last week for weekday swim. Hours are 8:30-9:30 and the cost is just $1.50.  The facility is a bit dated, but I would suggest that you consider taking advantage of this summer treat.

Evening, everyone. Just a reminder that there is no practice this week due to swim meets on Tues and Sat.

Tuesday (tomorrow) we are planning on a swim at Lake Raponda at 6pm. Carpool will be leaving the Rec Center parking lot at 5:30, or you can meet us there. If you have a wetsuit bring it along.

Saturday morning we will be at Woodford State Park at 8:30am. We can carpool from the Rec, leaving at 8:15 for anyone interested. It's generally chilly there as well, so a wetsuit may be in order. Fee to enter is $4, but we should be able to finish before the park opens.

As always, safety is paramount and we'll keep an eye to the skies. I'm driving a yellow Honda Odyssey. Rain, rain, come and play, but please keep your t-storms away :)

Howdy, folks!  Just a reminder that the Rec will shut down from Sunday, 8/23, through Monday, 9/7, for annual maintenance - back to two weeks.

I called Hoosick Falls town pool, and they plan to stay open through 9/6. The only adult lap swim is available Mon-Fri from 8:30-930am, with a cost of $1.50. The pool has no lane lines nor backstroke flags, but is a great option if you are able to make it in the morning. Their phone number is 518 686-4083.

I have lined up four options for open water swimming, as long as the weather holds out:

- Tuesday, 8/25, at Lake Raponda (Wilmington) at 6:15pm. Carpool to leave the Rec parking lot at 5:40.
- Saturday, 8/29, at Woodford State Park at 8:30am. Carpool to leave the Rec parking lot at 8:15. 
- Wednesday, 9/3, at Lake Paran at 7pm. Meet near the lifeguard chair.
- Sunday, 9/6, at Searsburg Reservoir at 5:45pm. Carpool leaving the Rec parking lot at 5:20. This will be an adventure swim in Somerset's little brother. Greg helped me get the idea: "I did check out the Searsburg Reservoir, and it's very nice - although small (but probably not much smaller than Woodford - and it's warmer). There is good parking and easy access about 1.5 miles down Somerset Rd. (which is on the left hand side, coming from Benn, almost at the bottom of the big hill on the Wilmington side)."

I will email the night before the swim with any changes. Weather is top priority, so we must keep our eyes to the sky to ensure safe and fun swimming!

Lake Paren and the State Park do charge entrance fees, but the stand at Paren should be closed at 7pm, and earlier this summer we arrived at Woodford before they opened so we did not pay. I will be at the places noted and at those times, so if you would like to join in, please come a few minutes early so we get started on time. My cell is 802-733-2687. 

If you are used to wearing a wetsuit bring it along as water temps should be warm, but might change based on the weather. Thank you all for your interest, I hope you can come and please feel free to pass this info to other interested swimmers. I won't make it to Paran tomorrow but should be there for the Searsburg swim Saturday. I swam in Searsburg Reservoir last week. The wider area (by the parking spot) is a decent temperature, but it drops off considerably as you head upstream in the narrower area, so people with wetsuits might want them.
