Summer 2014 Open Water Swims

Howdy, folks!  Just a reminder that the Rec will shut down from Sunday, 8/24, through Monday, 9/1, for annual maintenance - only one week this year! 

I have lined up four options for open water swimming, as long as the weather holds out:

- Thursday, 8/21, at Lake Paran (North Bennington) at 7pm. Meet at beach, Melissa Rowe will lead.

- Tuesday, 8/26, at Lake Raponda (Wilmington) at 6:00pm. I nominate Greg to lead.
- Saturday, 8/30, at Woodford State Park at 9:00am. 

- Thursday, 9/4, Lowell Lake (Londonderry) at 5:30pm. (Plan to carpool - Fern and Marie will be our guides)

I will email the night before the swim with any changes. Weather is top priority, so we must keep our eyes to the sky to ensure safe and fun swimming!   

Lake Paren and the State Park do charge entrance fees, but the stand at Paren should be closed at 7pm, and last year we arrived at Woodford before they opened so we did not pay. I will be at the places noted and at those times, so if you would like to join in, please come a few minutes early so we get started on time. 

I think that carpooling would be beneficial for the Raponda (35 min travel) and Lowell (50 min travel) dips, and I suggest meeting at the Rec Center and venturing out from there. I realize that the weekday evening swims are not the most convenient, but should offer a chance to swim when the waters are not as crowded. The time for the Lowell swim might be bumped a little earlier if others can make it, talk to me (or email my personal account at:

If you are used to wearing a wetsuit bring it along - I am not sure about water temps. Thank you all for your interest, I hope you can come and pass this info to other interested swimmers, and enjoy the rest of your summer :)

Thanks for setting up the swims, Mike. If someone can pick me up a bit earlier on 8/26 with a vehicle that can transport my kayak, I'd be happy to paddle along to provide a bit of extra visibility/security, since there can be powerboats on Raponda. It's a beautiful - and pretty much weed-free lake, though - and usually on the less-cold side.

I've had to leave town for a bit, but hope to be back by Sat. Also, since we've had some cool nights lately, if I do make it back, I'll check the water temp in Raponda so we can know "what we're getting into."

Lake Raponda in Wilmington Tuesday at 6pm. If you would like to enjoy this gem, meet at the Rec Center to carpool, leaving at 5:15. Or, meet at the Shaw's in Wilmington (parking lot, near the fence) at 5:50. A quick ride to Raponda for a super swim!

Checked Raponda's water temp off of someone's dock - it was 73F, so pretty comfy. See you all tomorrow.

We enjoyed a delightful swim at Raponda on Tuesday, including exploring the rocks on the west side of the lake. Thanks again greg for adding safety with the kayak.

Tomorrow morning the plan is to meet at Woodford State Park for a swim at 9am. I will leave the Rec Center at 8:40 if anyone wants to carpool. As I mentioned before, the park will be closed so we should be able to avoid paying the day use fee. The water is typically a bit cooler, so if you have a wet suit feel free to bring it along. Enter off Rt 9, drive past the park office and go right at the first fork in the road (there should be a sign for the beach). It's roughly 1/2 mile out and back to the beach, which is about the distance of our standard warm up in practice.

Looking forward to a great start to the long weekend, and hope you can make it as well!

Just confirming that Donald can kayak for us this Thursday 9/4 at Lake Raponda (not Lowell Lake as detailed below).  I can assure you all that it is lovely swimming!

Here is the view of Lake Raponda from last week. If you able to make it tomorrow night for a dip at 6pm, please reply to this thread. Plan to leave town by 5:35; carpooling from the Rec or another spot is a great option. This spot is a gem!
