Each time I haul, I have to deal with rust spots on the iron keel of
my 393. I had the same problem with my previous boat -- an '85 F305.

Have others experience this problem -- and how have you dealt with it?

I just pulled her out this afternoon -- so am having work done the
next few days.

iron keels seem to require constant attention. i finally stripped the coatings off the keel, treated it with ospho (phosphoric acid and zinc salts) and primed it
with 2 coats of awl grip epoxy hull guard. faired the keel with interlux watertight and put 4 coats of interlux 2000e over that.   when i pull the boat out in the  fall, we shall see if my treatment worked...

Have a Great Day!!! Brad

Seems like if that didn't do it -- nothing will. We are year 'round
in the water here -- so I only see her out once every 15 - 18 months.
But I get reports from my diver. I'll give some of your methods a
try.

Thanks,

Greg

Check the files for taking care of iron keels.

I have to chime in here ... We have a 10 year old B 473 that was repainted a few months ago after having a sanding job for the first time since we launched. We use Trinindad SR. The keel had never shown rust. We just hauled again for a wax job and the keel was spotless.

Could this be caused by galvanic corrosion? Our keel is grounded via connections from shrouds. I hope we are also grounded from the engine. I'll be asking bout this tomorrow from AYS.

Cap,

Its caused by a grounding…but not electrical…Once the epoxy coating on the keel is compromised (i.e. a hard grounding) good luck trying to get it right…and forget having a boat yard do it…They just paint over the rust and charge you $500.

There is a proper way to do it, though…just don’t ask me exactly how!

Maybe you have a lead keel?

Do you think the reason Beneteau grounds the shrouds to the keel is an anticipaton of making the connection between keel and salt water?

Our zincs dissapear rapidly and I am now using a 'guppy' zinc attached to the back stay to reduce the level of galvanic errosion we now experience. We have isolators on both house and air conditoner circuts. This new zinc is really being used up! It was shiney two days ago but is now becoming porous. Looks like we may be saving the much smaller zince on the prop, but I'd like to be assured that they are some how connected in this galvanic suction we have been experiencing.

While in Cape Lookout Bight a few months ago I replaced the evaporated zinc on the AutoProp. This seems excesive.

Cap,
I think your problem is the marina and or other boats around you now.

Nope! It's cast iron and doing just fine down there ...

I have spoken to others here at Sailing Emporium and they don't seem to be having problems with their zincs. I feel much better with the guppy attached to the back stay. Hopefully it will help us to avoide galvanicide.

Cap,
You need to make sure the zinc guppy is grounded to DC ground.
Not just to the keel thru the rigging, if it even is.
Run a lead from the engine to the zinc.

the beneteau235.com site has a link to this work - applicable to all
iron keels

i did mine about 10 years ago and it has held - sandblast - fill with
interlux filler, primer and then paint of choice all good... not sure
other stuff good for keel

I your zincs are being used up that fast and you're not in a marina I
would suspect a stray current from some electrical hardware on the
boat. You need to check that out as well. I had a similar problem
and it turned out to be my gps ground connection.

I'm looking to install a bimini on my First 305. This boat never had
one, but I've seen a few photos somewhere before of one installed. The
boom on the 305 is very low. Can anyone help with any details. Photos
and any dimensions would be great!

Thanks,

Bob
