Matt, Dobbins is privately owned.  Most boaters think it's open to the public but not so.  It's a nice area to anchor but power boaters will show you no consideration with where they water ski or how close they will get to you boat.   However, watching power boaters anchor is quite entertaining.

There is a large anchorage to the starboard.  Follow to day makers into a cover by Gibson island.  There is a large horse farm and view are great.  It's a popular area for sailboats.  Depth is 12'

I've been cruising the Chesapeake forever, but have never gone into the Dobbins / Gibson Island area.  What's up there?  What's it like?  I heard there's some kind of legal squabble with the owner of Dobbins Island?  Any info would be appreciated!

Jeff,

Thanks for the info.  So if I understand correctly, you are advocating anchoring over near Gibson Island to avoid the riff-raff over by Dobbins?

Thanks for the help!

I second that recommendation.  The anchorage Jeff spoke of is not in sight of Dobbins Island, but around to the north side of Gibson Island.  Very nice ... and it has quite a few fresh springs feeding it, so when the jellyfish get bad, that spot is usually free of them.

Yes! at least for the night.   dobbins has a sand bar that does not allow you to go around the island.  It fun a low tide with a  lawn chair or if you have kids.  You can also dinghy there.
