The cost of a new Amiot traveller car for my 1988 305 is more than that of a complete new modern system. Any other 305 owners done this upgrade? Would be interested to hear which system they chose and how difficult a job it was.

Hi Phil,
We replaced the basic Amiot traveler with a Harken windward sheeting system on our 1985 First 345. We loved it. Had it installed for us. Hoping to convince the Admiral to do the same on the new (to us) 1987 First 405
Cheers,
Brian (s/v Toujours)

On our 38s5 the traveler lost its "lip" so it was unusable.  We could not remove it since the bolts were frozen to a glass enclosed plate. No ideas from Ward or Todd.
Garhauer made a new economically priced traveler that fit the curve perfectly from drawings we gave them.  We slapped it on top, bolted it in, and it couldn't have worked better.

I upgraded our 305 with a midsize Harken system with windward sheeting car. 4:1 traveler with cleats on control blocks. 6:1/24:1 main sheet controls. Been able to release in a heavy blow or dropping the traveler with little to no effort makes all the difference in the world to be able to go fast :-).

Oh yes and sheeting in tight is a snap with the extra purchase.

Thanks for the responses, looks like a new track is the way to go for safety and ease of use. At the moment the car shackle looks to be worn half through and the wheels are cracked and worn. The Harken track system looks excellent (but expensive) and I have heard good reports on the Barton track system. Just another job I hadn't planned on doing!
