Guidance requested on the proper way to lube through hulls.

Is there an acceptable "spray lube" or "brush on lube" which can be used to accomplish this when the boat is on the hard?

I recall that some through hulls can be disassembled when the boat is on the hard.

Not clear on what can/should be done when the boat is in the water.

Thanks,

The actual thru-hull or the 'seacock ?  I assume the latter.

Step 7 at : http://nasailor.com/2010/11/09/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-thru-hull-fittings-and-seacocks/ summarizes maintenance. I actually make a pint of exercising every seacock every time I go to the boat and when we service them (fall and spring), I use a spray grease - it might be an aerosol based white lithium grease I am not sure, the can is on the boat.

IDK if that is the 'proper' way, but it is what we do.

PS - we just replaced six thru hulls and seacocks this last month - let me just say that the OEM Beneteau parts are not the quality we would all hope for but are likely what we have come to expect.

PPS - And yes the prop shaft tube nipple did snap clean off on me at 7:00am the morning I was due to launch, as I was connecting the last hose connection - to be fair I would much rather that happened on the hard rather then in the water and we had it fixed by 11:00am including getting parts.

I use white lithium grease.  I close the through hull and stick the nozzle up against the ball spray a generous amount of the white lithium grease on the ball.  Then exercise the through hull several times and that is it.  This has served me well aboard Our Dream for over a dozen years.  Our Dream is a 97 OC 351.

Mark: Seacock is correct. The article mentions "waterproof" grease with further detail.

Thanks,
