I have leak coming from the area of the stern tube aft of the shaft seal.  I say the area because it seems to becoming from a mass of fiberglass that covers the stern tube and goes down to the hull.  The leak is not coming from the shaft seal.  It's very slow (about a quarter cup a day).  Has anyone had a leak like this?  I don't know what the purpose of the mass of fiberglass is either.  I am looking for a yard in the north east Florida area  (Vero beach to Jacksonville) that can haul a 473 and fix this leak.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

John,
It is most likely the bond (seal) between the stern tube that hold the cutlass bearing and the skeg.
See attached picture.  This is a simple fix with a little fiberglass and epoxy.
Most likely caused by rough handling or something wrapped around the prop.
I recall the cost about $35 and I deferred till haul out.  I suggest you monitor closely and wait for some other time to combine with a haul out.
I doubt it will increase.

the amount of water is minimal,  no cause for immediate action...  long term it needs to be sealed to prevent damage to the layup  ( like a blister growing )

if you think you can identify the crack area from the water, you could do a temporary patch using underwater epoxy ( epoxy that adheres and cures in the water...routinely available )  it can be a DIY or get a diver to do it for you...  until the appropriate time that a haulout makes sense and can be combined with other maintainance...patching from the inside only keeps water out which is not a problem,  the real issue is what the water is doing along the way as it seeps in.

I have had very good experiences with St Augustine Marine. Expensive on an hourly basis but they do the job right the first time and don’t waste time.

I agree. John and I had similar issues.  The leak in the aft cabin looked like it was coming from the seal but with further investigation it appeared to be coming from under the fuel tank.  Thank God somebody at Winters in NJ knew it was the sealant around the cutless bearing.  Water was wicking up the outside of the shaft tube slowly and entering the valley under the shaft seal.  I had to haul , clean all the 5200 from around the cutless bearing and let any excess water drain out.  Re-sealed.  No water.  I had alot of water coming in on my leak so I guess it depends what your level of concern is as to when to haul.  Bruce (Breezy OC40)

All:  Thanks for the great input.  I am having a diver look at the stern tube on thurs.  Hope that's it. We will be leaving the boat in FL for a month, so we will probably have it hauled and fixed then.

Yes, I had the same problem, it was taken care of during my last haul out.  The water injection nipple on the shaft seal was broken and had to be replaced. It was electrolysized and hanging on by a thread.  This occurred after about 4 years of owning the boat, which I bought new. I also had the raw water intake valve replaced with a Marelon valve.  The old one was turning green and flakey and looked like it was deteriorating rapidly.

Sea Love in Ponce Inlet... no charge for lay days, so you-they can take all the time necessary to do job.  I once waited 2 weeks for part from Beneteau and just paid for the haul and block plus small labor for installation of part.  They do lots of larger sailboats and big commercial vessels plus coast guard boats.

Ask for George and tell him Guy sent you...

Sorry to revive an old thread (is it better to start a new thread) but dealing with this is on my pre-splash checklist. Is there a consensus on the best way to seal this back up (assuming one is hauled out)? I've received a number of opinions that vary from cleaning off the old goop and slapping on some 5200 to building up a few layers of thickened epoxy tapered down to the tube (I saw a newer Beneteau with the latter in a boat yard the other day).

Thanks!
