Hello from George , I have a new to me Beneteau First 41S5  1990 built. It has a Perkins Prima 50 engine.  I need to replace the users manual -- the one on the boat got all, mildewd.. I can get it online from perkins ...buttttt I need the enging serial number!!   So it happens that some prior owner repainted the engine and oblierated the serial number and its very hard to clean that paint clear!!   So if some kind sailor who has the same Perkins Prima 50 engine could kindly tell me just the first four digits of their Perkins Prima 50  serial number I would appreciate it. Thanks ,   George in Tampa

The "User"s Handbook" is the same for M50, M60 and M80T. Get a hard copy of the "Workshop Manual" TPD1273E-00. I will attach a soft copy but it's really poor quality.

It will say Perkins/Prima 500 Series, but this is what you need for specifications. Just in case the serial number of our M60 is: BA30148U609010Y.

            Good luck

I had a M50 in my OC400

I worked pretty good. Just a few issues mostly around the isolated electrical system and the camshaft system

Sheri at Trans Atlantic diesel is a good resource for parts. It uses a Bowman heat exchanger so you can get parts from them. Some of the Volvo parts are a little less money.

I had a bunch of stuff however it has all been sold.

Hi Fletch,
I also have an OC400.
Please could you give some more info on your issues regarding the isolated earth.
The PO has removed the earth solenoid from the wiring circuit, and it is my intention to look a reinstalling it when i reinstall the engine, but in order to do so, i will need to track down why it was removed - was it simply a failed solenoid? or was there some other issue that the PO 'worked around'

FYI. Found this great video on YouTube servicing the Perkins Diesel engine. Although the application is a Rover, it’s the same engine.

There are three relays. All mounted at the back of the engine.

The theory behind the isolated negative side is fine, it is about electrolysis. There are no anodes.

The wiring is no tinned and the terminal ends on the wiring are not the best.

One could easily clean it all up.

The other point of corrosion is the two rubber style connection blocks in wiring harness. They can be replaced with a terminal block.

By design, Perkins M50 engine block is not permanently connected to the DC negative. The reason is to eliminate electrolysis issues. For this very reason, you should only ever use ‘isolated ground’ or ‘IG’ type alternators. Long story short, do not ever connect the engine block to the DC negative yourself.

There are however some electrical circuits on the engine which depend on the engine block being connected to the DC negative (‘grounded’). Those are the four glow plugs and the engine stop solenoid. They only have a positive 12V wire connected to them and rely on the engine block they are screwed into to supply the DC negative connection. To resolve this ‘issue’, Perkins supply the ‘negative earth’ relay. When energised and only while energised, it simply shorts the engine block to the DC negative. So, when you push the engine glow plug button or the engine stop button, two things happen: one, +12V is connected to the whatever device needs to be energised and two, the negative earth relay gets energised to supply the DC negative through the engine block. Once the button is released, both circuits are disconnected, thus disconnecting the engine block from the DC negative.

Should the negative earth relay fail, a quick workaround to get yourself going is to short the engine block to the DC negative using a temporary wire (of decent size). Needless to say, this should only be a temporary solution until the relay is replaced.

Hope this helps…
