Yacht Device YDTA-01R - how to connect for diesel level measurement?

Hello,

I want to display the diesel level on my Raymarine MFD, for this I bought the Yacht Device YDTA-01R tank adapter which converts the voltage measured into a message on the NMEA2000 bus. But the Yacht device has 3 wires and the fuel sensor has 2 wires, see picture. How to connect the device? Has anybody did this before? And has the fuel button on the VDO control unit any effect on this set up? In other words, if the level is only measured when the button on the VDO is pushed, can the Yacht device measure the level without the button being pushed?

Yes, I added one of these to my sender a few years ago now. There are three wires because one of them is I believe a 12-volt reference, it should be in the instructions. Basically, two of the wires hook up to your sender (and one of those is ground), and the third must be given a constant 12 volts. It's not terribly difficult to hook up. It was trickier adding a "curve" that converted the sender response to a percent fill using the micro-USB slot.

The sender does not measure voltage. It measures resistance. That is why if you take the one wire from the sender and connect it to a negative ground the gauge pegs over. No resistance. 

The gauge sender varies the (resistance) impedance between the lead and the negative circuit based on the fuel level. 

If you use an ohm meter and move the arm you will see the change in the impedance. The ohm meter is the best way to check a sender. Even if it is in place. You will be able to tell if it is Euro or American. 

If you have an open circuit the sender is faulty. I believe full is 10 ohms and empty around 180 ohms. ( Euro) Stewart Warner or American is opposite. 

You can check that out on VDO website 

Remember to look for the Euro impedance. 

I am guessing the Interface to Raymarine or a gateway is American impedance. This you may need to change out the sender. If so I suggest Wema. No moving parts.

Thanks both for the feedback and suggestions. 

I followed the following part of the manual:

1.1 Standalone sensor connection

If you do not have a gauge connected to your tank level sensor (e. g. you have installed the sensor yourself), you should connect only two wires of the Adapter: the blue wire to the sensor «Signal» or «+» output and Black wire to sensor «Ground» or «−». The red wire should be left unconnected and its terminal should be insulated. The CONNECTION setting should be set to RESISTIVE (refer to Section VI); this is the factory setting. 

So only two wires connected, not three. 

I changed the configuration via the SD card option and now it looks like it is working. The VDO display indicates 75% and the Raymarine MFD now also shows 75%. I need to monitor, when the diesel level goed up or down that the value on the MFD changes as well. Will monitor in the coming weeks. 

Once this is working I will also add tank level measurements for the two water tanks :-)
