Hi to All Owners,
I'm new in the group and owner of a Cyclades 39.3 since Jan 21.

She came with a Raymarine Classic C80 with ST60 instruments and ST6002 autopilot.

the charts are navionics but quite old. After reading the document from Raymarine I plan to upgrade de firmware of the C80 to 5.16 from 4.x. plus buying or upgrade the navionics charts

Does anyone did such upgrade ? any hints or suggestions or alerts someone could provide ?
Doing firmware upgrade always give me a panic stress.

Thanks
Pedro

Hi Pedro,

I recently went through the same process. I’ve hade the C80 since I bought the boat in 2018. Last year tried the software upgrade with new charts.  I spent weeks trying to get the upgrade to work. The plotter showed no contouring or details I was on the phone with Navionics and Ray Marine. Navionics as well. Tried amended the root directory of the cards. Nav sent me a brand new card as well. No dice.

They have detailed instructions but they did not work for me.

Long story short. I upgraded to the axiom 12” MFD from the Minecraft display on C80.

Good luck,

Jon

Thanks Jon,

that's not encouraging since the charter is working today, and I'm' just trying to get an updated version of the charts.
Did you upgrade the C80 firmware as well?
Thanks

I'm having trouble finding updated chart modules dated after 2009. Used to get them from Jeppson.

I'm planning to move from Navionics Gold to Navionics+, but seams we need to delete the  .BP2 files from the new CF card.
some folks mentioned that it is working now without this deletion but leave the hint anyhow.

Hi Pedro,

My first post, but I did exactly this a couple of years ago. My c80 died.ibought a second hand one but it was back level on the firmware.
I had also held off on upgrading my Navionics CF Card until I was going on a trip.

Navionics told me I had to be on the latest firmware for the upgraded CF card to work(2Gb I think).

Trouble was I couldn't buy a CF card small enough for the C80 to read. (32gb was the smallest I could find)

I had to use the existing navionics card (12mb) to copy the firmware too. Then it upgraded ok, with raymarine support on the phone talking me through it.

Navionics usually insist on a card swap when you upgrade, but I managed to talk them into letting me keep the 12mb card. They deleted the maps of course.

If you have problems, call australian raymarine support and ask for Tom

I’m going to assume the answer is “no”, but does the 12 inch Axiom fit in the same footprint as the C80?

I’m in the same situation as others on this thread, and am starting to think a hardware replacement is the way to go. But I’m a little daunted by needing to integrate with my old SeaTalk/NMEA-183 stuff.

I’m not familiar with the entire context of this thread , but a NMEA 2000 /183/seatalk can be pretty simply transmitted with a multiplexer.  My vesper AIS connects all the things together, also sends to wifi.  I actually use my iPad and don’t have a plotter.

So there are solutions, but you’d need to do your homework.

The answer is no.

I bit the bullet.  The C80 has reached the end of its functional life.  CF cards were a pain in the butt.

Manufacturers no longer support the products.  It made no sense to throw money at dead products.  SearchingEbay to replace dead products is not a solution.

It won 't get better.

I have the RL80C with C-MAP NT+ cards. It works pretty well for the coastal cruising we do. We also use the Navionics App on the iPhone. I'm not about to toss $10K or more into new electronics.

Agreed it will not get better. Ride the wave....eventually the charts stop functioning and the unit fails. it was showing my position on land, after the software updates and spent too much time chasing a fix to show the contours it was supposed to detail.

The plotter sits on top of the instrument pod, not within it. The former owner had modified a bracket/arm for the C80 to sit out in front of the pod but that was difficult for me to see and use so it now will sit on top of the pod with the bracket. The unit fits great there -  will post a pic once install is complete next week.

Best of luck.

My winter project was upgrading all of the electronics (including autopilot). I haven't added up all of the cost yet, but it was around $4-5k (Axiom+ 9", rmk-10, ACU-200 and p70, 2x i70s). I reused my senders with an ITC-5.

I waited for sales, and received a $500 rebate on the autopilot. Selling the old gear on ebay will reduce that cost a bit as well. Cables and connectors do add up though.

I'll post some pics and lessons learned in a few weeks hopefully. The new raymarine gear is super easy to install and calibrate. I'm pretty impressed so far.

I feel the pain of not being able to load the charts onto the Ray Marine C series.  Last year we upgraded to the Axiom 7 (small 281).  I have to say the functionality is far better than the older unit.  Yes, there were issues with cabling and an interface with the depth gauge but it also provided an opportunity to upgrade to a forward looking unit that the C series would not handle.  I lived my old BlackBerry as well but time (and technology) marches on.

Hi Ben, the Axiom unit I purchased was from Raymarine (Axiom display + transducer).  It's great for shoals and shallow draft areas as you can "see" where you're going.  Perfect? No.  Better than looking straight down? Absolutely.  Hope this helps.....

(changed the subject as penance for thread hijacking)

How is the transducer installed? How does it perform? Does it still give you depth directly below the boat?

Thanks!

Ben.

Hi Ben,

Yes it does give direct "below the keel" measurements and you get the scale on the side that puts what's ahead into a depth perspective.  It installs in the hull like a regular thru hull so I did that last spring before launching.  If I have one regret, it's that I went with the Axiom 7 (ours is on a side mount off the binnacle and space is an issue) instead of maybe a 9 as when it's split screen it's pretty small.  On full screen it's great.  Also uses less current draw!  While not a lot anyway, it's always a bonus. Because of the size issue mentioned, we normally only use the full screen when in the shallows.  You can "see" rocks, ledges, etc.

I ended up calling Raymarine and they were really helpful on what I'd need for the entire installation.  At first I wasn't considering replacing tha AirMar transducer but I did get talked into it and glad I did.  You can always add it later.......

Cheers.

David

Forward looking sonar could 'sell' me. I've always been worried about hitting something (container, floating tree, railroad tie) when sailing at night. An issue for me is that I have no idea how/where the cables run in our boat.

How far ahead does it look and how quickly can you react and/or stop/change course?

I have a friend with a 50ft power boat and he has forward looking sonar/fishfinder on that and we have talked about whether n fact you could do anything to avoid a submerged log or propane tank or container at 20+ knots.....

Totally agree about refresh rates,  however if I ever do 20 kts + on our boat I'll probably be in the middle of a tornado.....    Yes you can vary the range with ever decreasing accuracy.  I have ours set for 0.5 knot as it takes us a while to get there and I'm not in the habit of watching it constantly.  Apparently there is an alarm but to be honest I haven't figured it out yet.  In shallows (anchoring) we bring it down to less than .01 knot as we're really just interested in the immediate area.  You toggle through ranges much like a navigation system in a car.  Pretty intuitive.

I didn't think raymarine had forward looking sonar.  Several other brands give you about 200ft.  That would be about 20 seconds of visibility at 6knots at maximum range.  Great for entering an anchorage at slow speed and constant viewing..not so much for open water sailing.

Check out the Raymarine site.....https://www.raymarine.com/multifunction-displays/axiom/

As mentioned, most of what we use it for is shallow water sailing and anchorages.  I could see that in a powerboat it could be significantly less useful.

On the depth under keel part: Does that mean the “current depth” parameter on my tri-data and the MFD will take the depth from the transducer? (For example, if I don’t have the sonar screen up on the MFD?)

Looking at the transducers for this, am I correct to think it would fit in my current airmar depth transducer through-hull housing, but need to be installed from outside? That is, with the boat on the hard?

I think can fit an Axiom 9 in the panel where the C80 currently lives. Probably not the 12.

Our transducer went into the same AirMar location, and yes you can use the depth info just you would now.  When not in that mode I have it show up in the top of the display in meters.  Just a readout.

I have a Cyclades that had a C80 Classic also.  I upgraded to the latest firmware using a 64MB CF card and a CF to USB adapter I bought off ebay.  Downloaded the F/W from Raymarine and copied it onto the CF card, and ran the update to the C80 per Raymarine's instructions.  Then, I upgraded the Navioncs Gold charts by reusing an older 2GB CF Navioncs card,  ordered the charts online, loaded their Chart installer software on my laptop, and the software took care of formatting the card and copying the files.  When I used the new charts in the C80, I had to turn off a couple of chart features because the C8 ran really slow with all the chart features turned on.

I just tossed my C80 recently because the screen was slowly getting fogged/UV crazed.  I now have a B&G Vulcan 12 in its place.

To close the loop on this topic

I managed to upgrade to the last Raymarine OS version 5.16, upgraded the navionics charts and installed a em-track 921 for AIS and add a Quak elec  A31 for WIFI and Multiplexer.
All working fine.

Now I have AIS on C80 and I can have all Seatalk and nmea0183 data over wifi.
with this i bought a Galaxy A7 (android) and I have another plotter with navionics inside the boat with all data (Wind, Deep, etc ) on a app I installed NMEA Instruments.
