I'm looking for info on replacing a water pump in a Perkins Prima 50 motor.

If this has already been discussed, could a person with knowledge email me off list so I may consult?

Otherwise . . . .

We just got back for our two week vacation aboard and our water pump appears to be leaking heavily. As such I presume it needs replacing.

The coolant leak is on the front of the motor under the cover that is behind the various pullies. Engine runs fine otherwise.

The question I have is can this be replaced by me or are there special tools or knowledge needed beyond a back yard mechanics garage?

I can and have swapped  water pumps on many cars. Is the Perkins Prima 50 as straight forward as a car?

I have what appears to be the original maintenance manual but it is NOT a shop manual and does not indicate a procedure for the water pump. Only the raw water impeller is described.

Thanks in advance for any input on this!

replacing the water pump is not rocket science. if you have the ability to change a water pump on todays vehicles, I would expect that you can get thru the one on the Perkins as well. I can not offer specific help because I did not own a boat equipped with a Perkins engine. however, every diesel engine I have ever looked at uses a very similar set up so with a little looking around and asking a few pointed questions to someone with the actual experience you will need should get you thru the replacement installation.

what you seem to be describing is a failure of the pump shaft seal. when this seal leaks, you get a drip or possibly a steady run of water on the back side of the pump, away from the impeller cover. this seal is needed to keep the raw water inside the pump housing. what I have seen happen to my Westerbeke water pumps was the rubber of the seal would break away from the metal casing it was originally bonded to. this allows the pressure building inside the pump as your impeller turns to get beyond the intended sealing surface of the shaft seal and leak from an area that is intended to allow the water get out before entering the engine where it could cause major damage if the leak was allowed to build up in the engine oil.

see this link for a shop manual I found when searching online http://www.marineryachts.com/perkins_manual.pdf

look for section M "Cooling" a bit more than half way thru the pages of the manual and there is an exploded view of the raw water pump. although this pump bolts onto the engine with a flange and what appears to be 4 bolts, as expected the internal components are very similar to what I have worked with in the past. this view will show you what the pump contains for parts.

I purchased a new raw water pump to install on our 473 when it failed at this same seal and installed that new pump. I had also ordered a repair kit that included new bearings, seals and a cover gasket that I used to rebuild the old pump and I kept that tucked away as a spare. in the 7 seasons we owned the 473, that seal failed 2 times. the second time I was prepared with a spare so the fix was very quick. the new pump may seem a bit pricey but the spare parts were very reasonable. if you have a little mechanical ability I expect that you also can get thru a rebuild of the existing pump if you decide to go that route. it really is not difficult in my opinion.

good luck

Scott, it is kind of straight forward, but not.

The issue is the timing belt, have you changed it, how many hrs on the timing belt, if over 1700 change it at the same time.

There are special tools to lock the fuel pump, cam and engine.

I have them along with a special tension gauge for resetting the timing belt.

The water pump is behind the timing belt.
I also have the shop manual.

I estimate 2.5 to 3 hrs.

I would be a Perkins mechanic or a good diesel guy.

I can send you the tools if you want.

If this is the raw water pump with the impeller in it that is driven by the belt I can tell you it was very straightforward on our Westerbeke 44Afour. Ours developed a leak on the seal, I bought a rebuild kit and a new pump (the old pump with the rebuild kit are still at home).

As I recall, I removed the belt and hoses. Undid the mounting bolts. Fit the new unit in its place with antiseize on the bolts, reconnected the hoses (may have actually replaced one of them) and put the belt back on. Hope yours is that simple.

Scott, I have just replace my raw water pump in the last month on the
same engine. But it sounds like you may be talking about the fresh
water pump if you leak is in the front of the engine.

The raw water pump is very easy, maybe 20 min's tops. The raw water
pump is on the starboard back of the engine up high. Give me a call if
you like. Mike MacLeod 4043869080
