Hi,

Does anyone have or know of a "First 285 Liberty Cup Edition" that
races under PHRF? The only spec doc I can get from Beneteau is for the
regular 285, they have no docs for the beefed up Liberty Cup Edition.
With honesty, I told our measurer my mast was 4 feet taller than
normal, now I must find documentation.

Any lead would be appreciated, my direct email is cja...@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Christopher

Chris,

I remember seeing one of those on the way home from the Liberty Cup Regatta
sailed in NY Harbor in 1987. It was pretty tricked out!

There is no mention of it in the US Sailing standard measurements book nor
is there any mention of a variant on the 285. No area has a handicap listed
in the 2006 PHRF Handbook.

I would suggest that you measure I, J, P E and ISP and give that info to
your handicapper.

Christopher,

Are you sure the mast is taller? I was under the impression, could very well
be wrong, that the Liberty Cup Edition was more of a trim level type thing.
Might have some upgraded winches and other stuff like that but nothing that
would effect your PHRF rating.

The PHRF NE website only lists two F285's one with a wing keel and one
without.

Remember when asking questions on the internet, the advice you get is likely
to be worth what you paid for it.

I agree with Bill.  I see no listing in the US Sailing PHRF Handbook for such a model.  It's really easy to attach a long tape measure to the main halyard and run it up to the black band.  Measure to the mainsail tack fitting and that will give you your boat's "E".  Compare that to the standard 285's "E" and if there's a four foot difference, you gave your measurer the correct data.  If it's within an inch or two, you have the standard mast.

Max,

That would be the “P” “E” is from the rear side of the mast to thee band at the outboard end of the boom.

I remember looking at one of these models when I was shopping and the broker told me that it had special sails, a name plate at the back and one or two other items - none were going to affect speed or ratings. I seem to remember a discussion about another set of winches but I'm not sure about that.

Duh.  Up, across, who can tell?  Just off a mixmaster delivery.  Sorry..

Christopher, please note the correction.

Thank you everyone for your help. I decided to simply agree that I
don't know how to measure, and accept the standard rating.
