Hello Everyone,

Some day, I'd like to add some stern rail seats to our 1992 First 310.
Does anyone have any product recommendations or experience doing so?

Thanks,

Matt

Seats are great dockside while entertaining and barely OK while cruising.
Under sail if a couple of heavy weights wind up using them there is too
much weight in the back of the boat. It makes the boat squat, causing
loss of performance which includes ability to point.. Observe what
happens to your waterline while at dockside when you have 3 or 4 adults
close to and behind the helm. That visual will put those seats off limits
under sail except for casual outings.

I purchased a set from Zarcor. Great fit. Definitely a great addition.

I must concur... we met the owners of Zarcor at the Miami Boat show they
were very nice and even came over to our boat one evening after the boat
show, made the measurements for the seats and I had them a week or so
later...fit great and they do get used often. I do like the products.

Here is an idea for you!
Since we are on a shoe string budget we do all the work ourselves, etc etc.

Well these "Stern Perch" rail seats have always intrigued me.

So I wnt to the local glass shop and had them cut me two large white 1/2
inch squares of the same plastic these seats are made of.
I used cardboard to cut a pattern on Destiny for each seat. A left one and a
right one. They are different to avoid the split backstay.

Ya know those plastic clip things that you snap on to your bimini frame to
keep the clear plastic off the frame on hot days? Well I used these to clip
the aft end of the seats to the pushpit! Got them from the canvas shop 15
cents each! I then got from the canvas shop two scrap stainless pipes used
for dodger frames for 6 bucks total. Cut them to length for legs for the
seats. Even got the ruber end protectors for that price!

Now the last thing I did was when I cut the seats they are not exactly
square. In one side of each seat I cut out a large oval. In this oval I cut
a hole.
This was for a drink holder. I got two pre-made cake frostings from Safeway.
Ate the frosting, and now had two pefect sized cup holders! Large enough for
a plastic pop bottle and small enough for a can! These were slipped into the
holes I cut in the oval in the seat! Perfect!

I also made the seats 1 inch wider all the way around than our square seat
cushions that are no longer floatation devices! We put a cushion on the
perch and plop our butts! There is just enough plastic around the cushion so
it does not slide off! We also hook the cushion strap the the pushpit to
avoid accidental cushion over board drills!

To buy the SternPerch seats would have cost me around 250 bucks. I less than
100 invested and they are bigger, more comfortable, and I don't mind leaving
them out when we leave the boat for shore trips!

Cheers!

Just looking for new ideas to make my cruising more comfortable!

Here as a few things we've done. What I'd like to do is gather other peoples
ideas and what they've done! I take take and implement the ones I like!

1: Clear companionway boards!
Great when anchored out but not private ate the dock

FIX:
Simple 3 dollar 2 foot shower curtain rod. Add to that a cheap curtain
of the admirals tastes!

2: Continously Sunk dinghy in Marinas It rains in the PNW a LOT! Destniy is
6 inches to long to hang the dinghy off the radar arch.

FIX:
cheap Sure submersable bilge pump! Add to that some PVC pipe glued to the
exit from the pump, run up and over the stern of the dinghy.
Using a 75' orange outdoor extension cord I made a 12v power supply. Cut
the ends off, add to one end of the 75'ter a 2 wire flat boat trailer plug.
The other half of the plug goes on the pump! The other end of the 75' cord
received a cigarette lighter plug! WOW! INstant power to the dinghy! IF I do
it again I'd use a larger/faster pump. It now takes twenty minutes to drain
an almost completely sunk dingy.

3: No accessary 12v in cockpit
Added a 12v cigaratte lighter power supply to pedastal. Now I can have
hand held GPS, cell phone (eek!) and pump for dinghy power in the cockpit!

4: TV for kids.. ( yeah I know. Floating condo and all. but I firmly believe
the longer the kids sail with us the better! )
LCD draws much less current than regular tubes! Get rid of that tube! My
Panasonic TV runs on ac using a converter to make 15v. That requires my
inverter.
So . . . I got a 12V-15V converter! WORKS GREAT! No inverter to watch
a show!

5: Tunes: JVC car stereo that plays MP3 off DVD's I can go for a week and
not hear the same song! Yeah!
Added benifit is the car stereo has no screen but it does play DVD
movies! run RCA jacks to previously mentioned TV and there you go! 12v DVD,
20" LCD TV! Yeah I know but at times it sure is nice! Did I mention no need
to turn on the inverter? Much more efficient!

6: Pushpit seats! Just mentioned in previous email! Home made!

OK, Here are some of the things I've done! Love to hear what you have done
to make life more interesting or fun on your Benny!

Just a couple of things (I have a 36CC):

1) Bought the rail-mounted device that allows me to remove my wheel when
docked and store it on the rail. Really opens up the cockpit. Tried the
folding wheel and didn't like it as much. I did have to 'modify' the post on
the device so that it would fit my metric wheel opening. Some abrasion to get
justthismuch of the mounting post removed was enough.

2) Created an insert for the aft cabin so that all three of my daughters
could sleep in the aft cabin and my wife and I forward in the v-berth.
Perfect. No sleeping children or sleeping bags to deal with in the salon come
morning.

3) Installed permanent shelves in one of the v-berth hanging lockers (it came
with two). Bought hanging shelves for one of the aft cabin hanging lockers.

4) Installed an anchor cleat just aft the anchor locker. Much more convenient
and better for the anchor line than going to the starboard or port forward
cleat.

Thanks,
Dave

Your item one is something I would like to do. How did you handle the
woodruff key and wheel nut? I worry about burring up the key way or key and
or losing the key and nut when removing them.

If you have an Edson wheel they make a rail mount kit.

Here are a few mods that we made on our Oceanis 440.

We found there were no places to secure drinks.  We had a drink and binnocular holder custom made for the hand rail on the binnacle.  The company made it for the same price as West Marine sold the generic model.

We use an IPod connected to our radio instead of a CD changer.  I mounted two cheap , West Marine speakers on the bimini frame and the sound in the cockpit is wonderful.

****My wife complained about the strength of the lighting.  It wasn't good for reading at night.  A friend, also a Beneteau boat owner told us about clamp-on lights at IKEA.  They look good and they easily clamp on.  They have a 110 volt battery pack but we wanted 12v.  Just cut the cord and they are 12v and tie directly into our 12v system and give excellent light.  I tied most of them into the fans that we have in each cabin. Best part, they are cheap: ~$19.00.

Since I have three daughters, we have an abundance of hair ties. I keep one
stretch around the wheel nut when sailing. Then, when at the dock, I put a
towel beneath the wheel and over the grate where the scuppers are (on the
36CC, anyone standing at the wheel is actually standing on the teak grate
over the scuppers), make sure the wheel is locked with the key at 12 o'clock,
unscrew the number, carefully remove the wheel, wrap the hair tie around the
key/post, and screw the nut back on.

So far, so good. No issues. I hope that helps.

PS: I do use the Edson rail mount attachment. It comes either tapered or
straight. The straight version is 1" in diameter which equates to 25.4mm. The
metric wheel that came with my boat is straight, but with an opening of only
25mm. Thus, I had to remove (using the belt of a beltsander and a vice).4mm
of material off the diameter of the Edson rail mount post to get it to fit.
Didn't take too long and doesn't appear to cause any issue except I couldn't
have returned it if I didn't like it. Edson didn't make a metric model at the
time.

May I just say, what a terrific thread!

Here's my contribution: the "dog catcher." Its a
piece of nylon fabric that was made to fit across and
cover the open space under the helm seat that opens
out the transom. It snaps on to the boat to create a
cover so that, in my case, none my little dogs can
fall out the back. But it also catches cell phones,
the handheld GPS that falls off the seat on a tack,
etc.

I have them too, on my B-323. When I'm singlehanding, I sit up on one of
them with the auto pilot engaged, and it's just great. They make for more
room when in the cockpit is full. And when dining in the cockpit, if you
have a lot of people, you can use the stern perch seats for extra eating
surfaces, their perfect with the built in cup holders!

Richard --

Our version of the dog catcher for our Yorkshire Terrier is that I keep one of the fenders under the helmsman's seat, with a line tied by a single overhand knot to the small pad eye at the base of the binnacle.  It keeps the dog aboard, allows plenty of room for water to go by if a wave gets in, and turns out to be really useful if I need to get to a fender in a great hurry, for example as something extra to throw out in an MOB situation.

I love some of the ideas here!
I have even thoguht of the "Dog Catcher" idea but not for a dog! But to keep
cold air from the outside hitting my legs when we sail in Puget Sound on
cold days! The cockpit is completely enclose with the exception of that
hole!

One more thing I thought of was mood lighting. I've always wanted to get
yellow LED lights to scatter behing the shelf fiddles for a dim back light
foe evenings. Well, what I do now is simply turn the starboard reading
lights away from you and towared the hull of the boat. It defuses the direct
light and the wood has a nice glow to it! I may dim the bulbs so it is not
so bright though!

Thanks for all the ideas!
I love reading them so keep them coming no matter how small or big they may
seem!

I would be interested in any ideas of "lighting" up the cockpit area ... I just have small light on pedestal.

If you are interested in mood lighting as opposed to lighting for work, we found a great lamp at Target (I think). It is a rechargable battery lamp with a build in dimmer, a 'parchment paper'-like shade, and a small haolgen bulb. We use a bungy to easily attach it to the dodger frame, set the dimmer as appropriate, and have great lighting for those 9pm dinners and wine. During the 4th, we've also strung those light ropes in the dodger frame for a nice effect (and red, white and blue lighting).
