My existing outhaul traveler is just not satisfactory (too much
friction). Sparcraft (Charleston Spar) recommended an upgrade to the
"Lewmar Size One System". Has anyone had any experience with that
upgrade or system that you can share?

Take a look at https://garhauermarine.com they have great products at good
prices. They worked with me to get a replacement unit for my F310, Prompt
delivery and the install was smooth. They are machinists who sail and
turned that into a business. 909-985 9993 Garhauer Machine, 1082 West Ninth

I have a B500 that did not come with any type of main boom outhaul
car. I have been searching for a suitable unit to purchase. Both
Charleston Spar (www.charlestonspar.com) and Isomat (www.rigrit.com)
offer main boom outhaul cars.

The Charleston P/N is 45003314029 which is for large booms and has two
sets of wheels that a stainless assy rides on. They also have a
smaller version which is just the wheels with an attach ring that is P/
N 45003314004 (standard boom) or 45003314005 (furling boom). Price
for the big one (i.e. 450033104029) is $384.

Isomat (represented by Rigrite in the US) offers a model NB32 or NB40
outhaul car depending on boom size. The part numbers are NB2-17A
(smaller one) or NB2-18AD (larger one). These cars ride on 4 Delron
wheels. Price is $169 and $189.

I have not purchased either one yet, but thought I'd pass along my
research for anyone else searching. If anyone has used either of
these, your experience would be appreciated. I currently have a
Velcro strap that is tied through the main's clew ring and wrapped
loosely around the boom. This does not work at all if there is any
load on the sail. It was recommended by North Sails in Seattle.

I looked at the Lewmar and Garhauer websites, but could not locate an
outhaul car. I'd call but it's Saturday. Again if anyone has more
definitive info on the Lewmar or Garhauer I would also like to hear
it.

Bil,

It sounds as if you have a loose footed classic main. The usual way they are
attached to the boom is with a Spectra strap made with eyes in each end that
are closed around the boom with a small shackle.

I have been using such a set up for 15 years with absolutely no problem.
I'll bet that you local sailmaker can make one for you for a hell of a lot
less that any of the outhaul cars you mention.

Last fall I installed a Harkin, but I don't know the size/part number. It was highly recommended by two guys who I respect. So far, so good. (I couldn't find any part number on the car).

Austin, our oceans 2 lewmar on our 323 is also insufficent for the loads generated.  We have already burned through 2 sheaves.  However, I was able to upgrade the sheeves to ballbearing sheaves and that has really changed things quite a bit.  I would look into this upgrade before you go too far.  The sheaves were $70 for a set a four, and my system needed eight total.

Our system uses 40mm sheaves and if you need the replacement number let me know.

Bill,
You are correct in assuming that I have a classic loose-footed
mainsail. I think the arrangement I mentioned (i.e. a Velcro strap
around the boom and through the mainsail clew ring) is the same as the
system you are using. The only difference is that the strap (which I
thought was made from spectra) has Velcro on one side to allow it to
be wrapped around the boom. But when the main is loaded it's
impossible to move it with the outhaul. I'll check back with my sail
maker who made it for me and make sure it's spectra material.

Thanks for the advice!

You might try loosening it just a fraction. I have the same problem, and if
it is too tight, it binds on the boom. Sometimes, we just give it a little
help with the hands to get it to slide along the boom.

Bill,

If that strap is not sliding easily over the boom I would suspect that the
outhaul line is somehow tangled inside to boom or that you have one or more
seized blocks somewhere in the system.

Bill,
Thanks for the input. But when I let the sail loose and it is only
held down to the boom by the outhaul line, it moves freely(i.e. when I
take off the strap around the boom). I've also looked inside the boom
and checked the sheeves and they are all fine. I've tried loosening
it as you suggested but that only helped a little. I'll try and
loosen it more and see what happens.

The 36.7 uses the Lewmar Racing size 1 - good system, with 6:1 setup
and endboom sheeting. If you have mid-boom it will take more oomph to
work it. Harken windward sheeting cars are nice also. Probably easiest
to stick with same brand since the track sizes are different between
manufacturers.

A liberal spraying of McLube on the track and a drop of Mclube "OneDrop" on the bearings of the car will also work wonders.
