Jack,

I disabled my on the panel bilge switch since in reality, what good is it when it's not hot all the time.  I used a great switch from a guy called Boaterbits on Ebay.

The switch is hot all the time and wired to an electronic float.  My electronic float has been in for three years and still works.  The high water alarm works great especially when the engine is running and you in the cockpit driving, having a beverage, and not below when you blow a hose.

“electronic float” is my issue.  I used the sesna-switch, I think.  West Marine now has a WM brand and no longer sells the model I was using.  Any ideas?

My impression from the 323 manual is that the bilge pump is always on, even when the switch is off at the panel;  all the switch does is turn it on even when the float switch is not engaged.

On my 323, the bilge pump is on only when you turn the switch on manually.  I learned this the hard way from experience when my water heater hose broke.

That reply is troubling, because when the switch is on the pump is certainly on, and you can't leave it that way for long.  I have never had enough water in the bilge to trigger the pump automatically.  From what you say, you (and maybe I) have no working float switch at all. The manual says "The pump is normally automatic but can be controlled manually from a switch on the main 12V panel. There is also a reset push button on the panel."  But the wiring diagram does not show a float switch.  I guess I don't know how it is (supoposed to be) automatic.

Many Beneteau models are delivered without automatic bilge pumps. I
have a 40CC and rather than mess with the very small capacity
standard pump at the bottom of the sump, I added a 4000 gph pump with
its own new thruhull and a 2" hose. That one I put on a float switch.
I went with the Johnson pump and switch, and wired directly to the
battery circuit (on the load side of a Link 20) with a breaker and an
ON/OFF/AUTO switch. The new pump is not at the very bottom of the
sump in the bilge, but in the space just above the sump. So I still
have to use the manual "switch" (circuit breaker) at the panel to get
any water out of the sump, but the new pump will activate with any
more serious water accumulation.

Is your switch really a circuit breaker? That's a hint that the pump
is really OFF when you turn that switch off, ie, it's not on "auto".
And does your wiring diagram show which side of the battery master
your bilge switch is? On all Bene's I've seen, the bilge pumps are on
the load side of the battery masters (ie, they are OFF when you turn
off the battery master switch).

I'm baffled why Beneteau chooses not to put automatic pumps in every boat.

Cheers,

Mike

Rick:
On the 331, which seems to have the same configuration, you should find two glass fuses on the board above the engine that control the completly automatic function of the bilge swith. I thought I had a bad switch, but it turned out to be bad fuses (expensive mistake) easily repaired that allow the sump pump to be alive no matter what the battery switch position is or what you are doing with the switch on the panel. This doesn't appear in the standard wiring diagram but B has it as a seperate supplemental drawing I got from customer service.

Hi -

Does anyone have a diagram of how the float switch circuit is suppose to be wired - I never noticed that we were missing the float switch until a few years ago - it has always been on the to-do list to install but I never get around - tried tracing wires - but - surprise - they don't seem to be labeled right -

Thanks -

You might do what I did about a month ago.  I lifted the floor board and filled the bilge with water to cover the intake and a little more.  I wanted to  clean the bilge to make sure there was no dust or dirt down there which would clog the intake.  Nothing happened, until I turned on the bilge pump switch.  Then the water sucked out.  No automatic float switch down there.

When the hose to my water heater broke about a year ago.  42 gallons of fresh water filled the bilge and over the floor boards.  Nothing happened until I turned on the bilge pump.  And then the fiberglass dust in the bilge clogged the filter on the bilge pump and the pump burned out!  And also burned out the fresh water pump as well.  Both had to be re-wired.  Now, I make sure the bilge is clean.

I thought this was pretty normal, not having a float switch, until I looked at a Hunter 45 DS a couple of weeks ago.  The Hunter had two automatic float switches in it's very deep bilge!  Made me think about some short comings on the Beneteau 323.

Be care with the sensa-switch. It is not designed to work with Jabsco
pumps and will burn out. I installed one on my Beneteau and it failed
(quit working). The rep told me that there was something about
certain pumps that cause it to burn out. I would verify with the
sensa-switch manufacturer before I relied upon it.
