I am having trouble with bilge pump. It is an older diaphragm pump and it takes a long time for it to prime. I can't find any air leaks. There is a filter but it does't seem to have air leaks.  Under the pump is a lot of "dust" which looks silvery. Maybe the pump is shot?

If I replace the pump, what size pump should I get to replace the old one on a 44 ft boat?

bigger pump, if the discharge hose will handle the volume.

my preference is for 2 pumps

one small automatic pump  ( rule makes a 300 gph auto pump that I like ),  it is small enough to fit into the sump approx 2"x 3"),  it pumps down to the last 1/4 inch of water,  it's only purpose is to get rid of the occasional water that makes it into bilge... it has an auto sensor which checks for water ( resistance ) if there is water it will run until all water is gone otherwise there is a buzz for acouple of seconds...  it will keep the boat dry...float switches need about 2" of water to activate which allows a lot of water to accumilate before the pump kicks in...large capacity pumps do not do a good job of removing the drips and drops that amount to a few cups of water ( that wouldn't pimpe or fill the hose enough to dischage

a second large capacity pump for major water activated by a float switch... best to match the size / capacity of the discharge hose already in place

Bill,

If it is one of the diaphragm type pumps driven by a cogged belt then you can get a rebuild kit and make it like new.

I have been concerned with the smallness of what might be called the Bilge. If it is on automatic will this not cause an excessive drain on the house batteries

the current consumption is almost non existant and when there is water it usually is a few "drops...  pint or less...  it pumps only if there is water...the sump on the Beneteau is two quarts at best... the Beneteau has had one since new, almost  20 years  and  never had a power issue or a wet bilge ( I just installed the 4th pump on Wednesday... they do wear out after few years )..  use two on the race boat...one in each bilge... on a wet distance race they are pumping constantly for a day or so and do not run the battery down  I threw the packaging away,  but when checking for water the current drain is milli amps

If the small pump runs enough to run your batteries down, then you have a serious water issue which you have neglected to repair,  and you are used to having ankle deep water over your floor boards from not checking on your boat

Bill,

My spell checker took over my email. What is a cogged belt?

it's a belt with teeth for grip,  a normal smooth belt relies on tension / friction for grip

Bill,

It’s a rubber belt designed to go around small gear like pulleys. Spare parts are readily available.

In order to have two electric pumps, don't you have to put another thru hull in the boat?

On Breeze Pleeze the pumps are t'd

Denny,

What do you mean "t'd"?  Do you mean they are connected on the same line?

Bill, technically they are w' d and have 1 through hole out of the boat

... it is possible to share a thru hull,

I tapped into a sink drain...  the pump discharge line MUST be looped high and attached bottom side of the sink counter before it goes into the drain line..,  the high loop prevents syphoning / water flowing back to the bilge through the pump when the sink is used...  this is OK for drips and drops... on sink drains that normally are not closed to prevent sypohoning when under sail...

Bill I have this type of pump on my 351. The arm that drives the diaphragm from the motor has worn. That’s where the dust is coming from. You can buy a rebuild kit for these. They are very simple to rebuild.

Randy,

You are right, it is the bearing in the arm that drives the diaphragm.  Where can I buy a rebuild kit for a Par pump?

Randy,

The local boat store was able to order a rebuild kit.
 Thanks,

Bill

You can get them at West Marine or Google online. They are very common parts. I keep probably a couple of spare pumps and two rebuild kits on hand.

Hi Bill,
I have just go to back to reading the B list and saw your post.
Maybe you have already solved the issue, but if not maybe my
experience will help.
I recently found the pumps wouldn't prime. (My 423 has two pumps in
parallel, sharing one pickup, filter and outlet.)
I found that the stainless steel plates in the valves had corroded so
badly that the rubber flap wouldn't seal. I managed to clean two up
enough to work and blocked off the other pump. I have now put new
valves in, of course. It is quite easy to inspect the valves, so that
is worth checking before you go suspecting other things.

It is a silly arrangement, as if either pump has its valves fouled,
air just circulates and even the good pump won't prime. At the least
they should have separate pickups to prevent this.

Stuart,

Thanks for the info.  In my case the bearings were shot.  It was $80 to replace the bearing or $150 for a new pump.
I choose the later. I appreciate your advise.

Bill
