Has anyone tried to match the interior wood veneer, Douka I believe,
with any off the shelf veneers? I would like to build some custom
cabinetry for our Benneteau 331, but I am not sure what or where to
buy the veneer? Any help would be appreciated.

There are a number of names for the wood Douka, Makore or African Mahogany
are other names. You can check it on a number of Websites for exotic lumber.

I have used the Mohawk pre cat lacquer on Maroke solid lumber and it matches
very very well.

Look for names other than douka they are more commonly used.

You can also buy prefinished veneered plywood from Beneteau, I was able to
buy small pieces cut from a sheet from Annapolis Yacht sales. The Beneteau
stuff is finished on both sides and is an perfect match.

Isn't this partly about the wood but also partly about the finish ?

Do we know how Beneteau finish the wood ?

I have not been able to find any place that sells Douka (aka Makore) veneer.  There are several rare wood vendors who sell Douka in lumber dimensions, and I believe that Beneteau will sell their plywood in large sizes.  I would also like to find a source for the veneer, if there's anyone out there who has a vendor.

Yes, Beneteau uses a lacquer which has stain in it, and you need to try to match their stain.  But I've added a couple of items using solid Makore and found that it's not hard to match the stain.  I haven't bothered to use stained lacquer, but just stain followed by a good polyurethane varnish.  I'm not sure, but I think you can buy small quantities of their lacquer from Beneteau if you wish to go that way.

It is difficult to match the wood (to my satisfaction) using another species.

I used the Mohawk stain pre cat lacquer on new wood and also on touch up on the existing wood. It worked very well,

The key was to use aqua buff polishing compound after to take our the spray marks and get the gloss right.

It is not hard to make it look like new.

You can buy the Mohawk stuff alot cheaper than from B

Here is what I have from previous list postings.

Beneteau Suppliers

There is a good article on the B owners web site: (Woodwork)

Mohawk is a company that makes finishes that B recommends.

Here is the list of Beneteau recommended suppliers:

Material Sources:

  • Polyester buffing compound: Aquabuff 2000 from Hawkeye Industries 800-977-0060
  • Lacquer: Pre-Catalyzed Lacquer Satin #102-0412. Mohawk Finishing Products. 518-843-1380
  • Super Blush Retarder #103-0476
  • Burn-In Kit: Behlen's burn-in kit. #850-987. Woodworker's Supply.  800-645-9292
  • Burn-In Sticks: the best match is Lt. Walnut #850-868. Also useful are Dark Walnut # 850-931 and Cherry # 851-889 Woodworker's Supply
  • Wax Fill Pencils: Minwax Bend-Fil #'s 5 (most common), #3 (light), #6 (dark). available locally
  • Felt tip marker: Behlen Scratch Remover: Cherry #851-260.  Woodworker's Supply.
  • Touch-up Markers from Beneteau France: Light Cherry: part # 270010, Dark Cherry: #006013
  • Varnish/stain pens: Furniture Touch-up Stain manufactured by Master Products, Inc. Available through Cecil James Paint & Wallpaper Center, Marion SC 843-423-5814.  The best match is Early American #10040. Also useful is Cherry #10010.

The finish is very hard, harder than varnish and easy to apply. Maybe

it is worth a try on a small piece. I think it is the way to go for a factory type look.  This is what I am attempting to achieve.

Bob,

I haven't done it yet, but when I discussed custom cabinetry with St Barts, the dealer, he said Beneteau will sell the wood.

Hi Bob,

Wow= thanks for the great compilation of info!  While we are on the subject- I've got two finish repair questions-

I dropped a big bronze water strainer and it bounced from my very polished finish saloon table to the wood floor.  It broke and dented the lacquer finish on the table without denting the wood.  On the floor, it dented in the lacquer finish and made a small dent into the underlying wood.

What is the best way to achieve a decent looking repair of these two spots-

The lacquer dent on the table

And the lacquer/wood dent on the floor.

thanks,

glen

Have you tried the hot itron/wet towel trick? it is used in musical instruments to remove dings. Simply heat up an iron (start at medium heat) and place a thin damp towel over the ding. Heat it up for a 15-30 seconds and see if the ding disappears. If not, increase time before increasing heat. I've done it on guitars, coffee tables and other lacquer finished items.
