Wanting to replace the anode (zinc) in my First 310's Volvo Penta 2002 engine. I am presuming that it has never been replaced - boat has always been fresh water. I have the parts explosion of the cylinder head from VP Parts Express and it appears that the anode is supposed to be on the front of the engine under or near where the thermostat goes. But, before I order parts, I wanted to pull the old one and see what condition it was in and what kind of cap holds it in place (male vs female) and whether I need to get a new cap as well as the anode. So, I went out to the boat last night to look for it and can not find it. Does anyone know where this thing is located?

I recall it was close to the thermostat cap. Lower and held in place by a square-head bolt (not a regular exagonal-head one, so it should be easy to spot it). If I recall ( 2006 is now some time and some boats ago...) it is actually a cap screwed to the engine and with the mentioned square head.
In the inside part there is a groove over which to screw the zinc - a 1.5 inch long cilinder.
Hope it helps

Yes, that's where I expected to find it but do not see it as you can see in the pictures attached to the original post. Per the parts explosion I have, it should be where that black hose is under the T-Stat. But, obviously not. And, I have found no square headed cap/nuts anywhere that I have been able to see. So, I am still searching for an answer. Thanks for your reply.

Well. I figured it out with the help of Marine Parts Express Tech guys. This engine is the "Freshwater Cooled" version of the 2002B. So no anodes in the block or head. Mystery solved.
