Hey all,

I have a Beneteau 361 with in mast furling and loving it... the only
problem is the car, it's using a slot in the boom to slide back and
forth and with just a small amount of load it gets hard to pull. When
I set the sail I just walk up top and putt it out a few feet and then
winch it but I'm thinking there is a better way. this isnt really how
the sail is furled, I think, as its really easy to take it in and out
but is just friction on the car itself I'm trying to look at.

I'm thinking there might be a car that slides easier in this groove or
perhaps something I can put on it to make it easier.. any ideas be
greatly appreciated!

thanks!

Ease the main sheet and the vang and you should find that it works fine. Often the vang is left "on" and then it becomes hard to move the car.

Gaute:

Be advised that Carleston Spar has an "after market" track and car which attaches to the boom slot and fixes the issue.

When we worked with them on the topic, they were very customer friendly.

Milner-

Just be aware that the shipping charge on the track was approx $200,
due to it's length; the new track and car made some difference; what
made a much bigger difference in my situation was getting the right
halyard tension, furling the sail with the right tension, and hosing
clean the ball bearings in the furler.

Most in mast units I've worked with (351-352-361-321-311-381) had a track on top of the boom, and a car was mounted to the track...  The track mounted in the slot you mentioned... I've never seen a car directly in the slot.  That approach is used for classic mains, esp when loose-footed.

My 381 has a fitting in the slot and the bolt rope is actually in the slot. If there was a track then the bolt rope would not fit. This is a classic main.

Hmmmm... Maybe we'll keep to our present system of easing the vang & sheet to make the adjustment.... :-)

are you sure it is the car......or is it the furling line getting shaffed and enlarging, making it difficult to pull out

I sprayed SailKote on mine and it fixed the problem.

I second that... I'm not putting a track on the boom, did that on the
mast for a spinnaker pole and it was a PITA. I like having it in the
boom but I definately think it adds friction but for $200 I can
definately ease the vang and let it flog until its furled... I couldnt
help thinking there is some other solution though.

I'm pretty sure the car has a lot of friction and its not the furled
sail as I can easily pull it out. the biggest problem is when I start
unfurling it and the sail sort of pulls the car "up" from the boom,
once back a few feet its all good. If I need to put more outhaul I
have to head up and release pressure, then pull out... its probably
the right thing to do but the car's metal, the booms metal and I'm
used to seeing some sort of bearings in there.

Sailkote is a good idea and I'm going to give that a shot. Love the
inmast furling though, this is just a inconvenience and maybe a fun
project :o)

When I first started sailing on the brother-in-law's 361, unfurling the sail was not a good experience. Then, on a calm day I isolated the components and found that the sail unfurled and furled easily; the car moved back and forth in the boom freely. It was the process of unfurling that was the problem. I would go up and beat on the car with the heal of my hand, or simply grab it and tug it back to the desired position. Not great. Releasing the vang along with the sheet pressure makes all the difference. You can flatten or increase draft appropriate to the conditions without much trouble. The problem then for the crew member is that it becomes the circus of three rings at the single cabin-top winch as one messes with all the lines to accomplish this. Then again, that is what keeps me svelte -- or is it sweat? :-)

I replaced the car and track with Harkin. Problems over.

Just keep it rinsed clean with the occasional hose squirt. I avoided lubes because they tend to attract dirt. Don't know about SailKote, though. It's a dry finish that probably doesn't attract much.

A former boat neighbor in Annapolis had his 381 modified because of the same problem.   A local rigger installed Genoa Track to the top of the boom and used a Harken Genoa Car.   That worked great!  I think you could easily DIY and go to Garhauer.   Since they sell factory direct, why pay all the mark up and Harken is over priced anyway.   My Harken Batt Cars are junk and wouldn't recommend it.

My next main (classic) will be loose-footed, and I'll add a car then.

Gaute:

I have an 07 373 with Charleston Spars in mast furling, and am overall
very pleased.

I also had the simple car which resided in the track slot. I noticed
increased jamming last Summer, to the point where it had became
jammed. I was not successful in finding a dependable solution under
load. I spoke to Charleston last Summer and they recommended that I
install their track and car modification. I installed it last
August. The installation was quick and simple as the track sits in
and above the existing slot. The new car is excellent. No friction
in or out. I am going to add an auxiliary roller above the turning
sheave at the back of the boom as I believe the angle is a bit
excessive when the car is fully extended.

Adding to the in mast furling discussion. I have never had the least
problem with the furling in condition up to 45kts. The nest part is
that it really encourages you to get your sails up and use your boat
under all conditions. The ability to infinitly adjust the reef under
load is great for maintaining balanced conditions. Just watch the
spacing at the vertical battens when adjusting the reef.
