Yanmar is the superior engine in this marine class.

Hi David,
My 473 has a 76 HP Yanmar, and its been great.
Plenty of power.
Maintenance parts readily available…
It’s the consensus best choice….and a great boat by the way.

David,
I ordered our 2004 B473 with the standard Volvo 55 Hp engine (D2-55) with a three bladed Max prop. Both have been excellent for over 12 years. Plenty of power with low fuel consumption.
I have only had to perform maintenance twice beyond the preventative oil, oil filter and fuel filter changes. In 2008 our neighbors boat was struck by lightning and the pulse fried the internal voltage regulator. I had a local auto alternator shop repair it for less than $50.00. In 2014 I replaced the raw/saltwater pump when the bearing started to go. I do not recalled the cost for the new pump but I thought it was reasonable at the time. I was able to order online with delivery in a couple of days.
Your mileage will vary, Cheers
Matt

Let me tell you about my engine ordeal.
My model year 2003 36.7's Volvo MD2030 seized back in November due to a bad injector. Volvo no longer makes this engine. The new engine was not available in the US due emissions issues. They offered me a 40 hp replacement but I passed. I ended buying a Yanmar but had to have the mounting grid rebuilt to accommodate the new footprint. Eveything else went faily easy and 5 months later i was up and running. I had tap into my retirement to pay for it... in the long run i think the yanmar will be a better engine but the Volvo was flawless until it wasn't...

No, i had the Volvo dealer in Charleston and the City Boat yard look at it. They both referred to the engine as "disposable" throw away types. Kinda like money...
I’m on my 18th season on my 2 cabin 461 #89 but I have the 75HP YANMAR 4JH2-THE with a 3 blade Max-Prop. I live aboard at the moment so she’s loaded but I still cruise at 8.2kts at 2800RPM. The YANMAR is a very nice engine and I have never had an issue with it. I took a YANMAR diesel course so I service it myself and access to the engine is very easy. Spares are readily available although YANMAR has some sort of distribution war going on so I can’t order parts online from the east coast(I’m in Seattle) and I have to buy in person from the local distributor who always has what I need.
I have the classic mainsail and think she is a good sailor and in anything over 10Kts apparent will easily sail at hull speed which if I recollect is 8.25kts. Top sailing speed on mine was 14.6kts during a 25kt broad reach down the straits of Juan de Fuca under full main and spinnaker during the 2006 Swiftsure Race.
The 473 is a bigger boat I have one a few docks up from me and she seems to dwarf the 461 but it appears they have the same mast and rig. I am also not a fan of the submerged transom of the 473 which just doesn’t look right.
I have always liked the 47.7 which is a similar size and I see a few of those around now at much lower prices than in the past.
Regards
Stewart

We like our Westerbeke on our 381 too. Very reliable, great access the way Beneteau chose to install it and easy to work on when needed. Runs smooth and quiet compared to engines (on smaller boats) a 27hp Yanmar on a 37' Jeanneau, a Volvo MD5 on a Kyrie 32 and a 16hp Fetus on that same boat (repower).
Burns about 2/3 gph, we cruise it between 2200 and 3000 rpm depending on conditions and load. We don't use it at idle to charge the batteries.
I have had no issues getting spares by mail order / internet. Hansen marine especially for Westerbeke specific items.
I know it a not the exact question you asked but I wanted to share my experience wit Westerbeke.
