I have a 2007 Beneteau 373 that I’ve had for about a year now.

Part of the teak on the swim step came loose. I grabbed it before it disappeared overboard, but am looking for advice on how I need to fix the step long term.

What remains seems to be slightly loose and water accumulates under the wood.

If I work the rest of the wood off the underlying deck, what should I be using to get the old adhesive removed, and then what is the procedure for putting the wood back in place properly?

There are no bungholes on any of the existing wood, so I’m expecting it has only been held in place by the adhesive and caulking.

Thanks for any suggestions or pointers to video explanations.

Hi Wim

I'm truly sorry to see this...good that you were able to retrieve the lost pieces.

I assume there must de a good 3M adhesive you can use to reapply the missing pieces after the area has been dried up. And seal it along the edges afterwards.

The recommended adhesive for this repair, by Beneteau is 3M 5200. Obviously thorough cleaning and rinsing with acetone is required. The black filler can be done with black caulking available most places. Weights are required to hold down the wood until glue dries. I have done this on a seat panel, but I used 4200 as I wanted a little more flexibility in the final repair. Mine has held for approx. 5 years at this point.
Good luck.

With 5200 it will be there for the life of the boat. I wish you well.

William,

Have you considered Plas-deck or another similar vinyl product for replacement of the panel? With the location on the swim deck it might be a better solution. When I had my First 310 I installed Plas-deck on the seats and on the steps going down to the cabin. It looked great and traction was excellent. Better yet no maintenance. I know some people prefer teak but there is another option. I now have a First 36.7 and have the inlaid teak on the seats. I would not tear out the teak as long as it is in good shape to replace it with Plas-deck, but if the teak deteriorates and comes loose I would replace it with Plas-deck. Very good product and easy to install.

Hello:

I agree with Bill.  I have a B473 and have exactly the same problem.  I plan on replacing the teak on my swim platform and cockpit with  PlasTEAK.  I reached out to them and for both the cockpit and swim platform it was just over $1,000.  I think just the swim platform only was going to be $350.  Of coarse this is a DIY job and this is my next project.  Donna Ross was who I worked with.  Her info is below.  Good luck:)

Bill,

I have a 21 yr old 36 cc and the teak seat are showing their age and my scrubbing off the grime, looked into Plas-deck briefly, but it is too cold to do anything on the boat at this time, and another nor’easter is due this weekend. Is it possible that you could briefly give me a short summary of the time frame involved in measuring, ordering and instillation of the product and a ballpark cost figure? I will have to do something in the next year as the teak has actually wearing away in a few spots in the cockpit. Would appreciate any information you might be able to provide.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Andrew,

There are several Youtube videos that you can view that are very informative. Without going into a lot of detail you start out with getting the template material from Plas-deck which is a heavy clear material. You make the patterns of your seat areas, noting which direction you want the caulk lines going and send them to Plas-deck. They cut out the Plas-deck to your patterns and ship them to you. I believe the cost for the cockpit seating area and three steps treads going into the cabin was around $600 in 2015. With the sealer and tools I probably had $800 in the total project. The Plas-deck is glued on with their sealer. I used hand rollers that we install deicer boots onto aircraft wings. It was a very straightforward installation. It probably needs to be done in warmer weather.

As I understand it you can purchase precut teak replacements for seats and the swim decks.  Just give them the model and hull number.  I think all of them for a 343 is about $1200-$1500 US.

This is a very nice writeup, curious if the Beneteau 40 had a teak floor or if you laid it over the nonskid.  My 331 is nonskid cockpit floors. The old girl is 20 now and the flooring is showing a bit more wear than other areas.

Looks very nice.

Synthetic wood is great with one exception.

It gets all most impossible to sit on in the hot sun.

Just be certain that if will work in your climate.

BENETEAU make the replacement teak panels ( sheets) at a very reasonable
Price.

You can also get replacement sheets made to glue down. A little thicker material which will last longer.

Just sayin

Thanks for all the input. I may sit with some acetone and shop rags and see if I can get the old adhesive removed from the space.

I also just looked at the website for https://raptordeck.com/ since I drive past their location every time I go between boat and home, and I've heard good things about their product on a recent refit race boat.  The Seattle Boat show starts next Friday, so I may walk around there looking for more ideas or deals.
